Jom Sembang with Faridah & TAS Academy Workshops
Have some fun, learn some skills!
Feeling weighed down by lockdown lethargy? Let us inject some fun, some skills to cope by professionals and a whole lot of adventure this July through to August via klpac and The Actors Studio’s online space.
First up, definitely some fun! In conjunction with International Friendship Day, we are inviting friends near and far (Singapore? Australia? Korea? Christmas Island? Mana lagi!) to join “Jom Sembang with Faridah” on 31 July 11.00am. Entry is by donation of RM10, RM50 or RM100 and you can register via bit.ly/askfaridahanything.
“In the early days, Christmas Island listeners used to tune into Voice of Malaysia network. Now that we are online, I hope we can reconnect with old friends we have not seen due to the pandemic and make some new ones. Since we can’t open the doors to our theatre (yet!), we will be opening a virtual one for all of you,” said Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican.
Faridah will be sharing a bit about her life and lifelong passions before opening the floor to questions. If you could ask the First Lady of Malaysian Theatre anything, what would it be? Would it be about Joe? Her cats? Her greatest fear? Her favourite food? Start
thinking.
Whether you are an educator, or a parent, caring for your young one’s mental health can be challenging.
Pick up some tips in our one-day workshop on 21 August from 10am to 12pm entitled “S.O.S! Merging Psychological and Dramatic Techniques To Overcome Mental Issues” conducted by experienced and qualified academics, Pang Chia Yee and Mark Beau de Silva, from Taylor’s University School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
This interactive workshop will integrate psychological practices to identify emotional and mental stress, and performing arts practices to help you cope with isolation, stress, and
other negative feelings through simple exercises. Course fee is RM50 per pax or RM25 if you are a student. Register via bit.ly/tasa_registration.
This upcoming workshop is part of Taylor’s University School of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Outreach Programme to #savethearts and assist communities and industry partners during the pandemic. Earlier, de Silva conducted another class “How to Teach Creatively Online” which was attended by almost 100 teachers nationwide. 122 theatre lovers were also wowed by a creative Zoom performance “Once Everything’s Done, I Just Wanna Go For a Run'' by 13 TUTAS Bachelor of Performing Arts students. It was “a moving piece that paints the hardships and inner turmoils everyone is experiencing,” said TUTAS student Nicholas Lai. All proceeds will be channelled to klpac’s Covid-19 Emergency Relief Fund.
For parents, The Actors Studio Academy @ klpac’s School Holiday Programme is still running through August. Little ones are invited on an exciting new adventure with “Journey into the Caves of Wonder” from 26 to 30 July and “Let’s Explore the Woodlands!” from 2 to 6 August with Teacher Vicky Ang. Those aged 16 to 25 can try “Creating Online Theatre: Zeitgeist Circa” which will be taught by Teacher Tung Jit Yang from 26 July to 7 August online.
With theatres closed for most of the pandemic, these online activities help keep klpac and The Actors Studio afloat. Its loss due to Covid-19 already exceeds RM2 million and
it will need to raise RM485,000 to stay afloat until November with no hope of reopening soon.
