MALAYSIAN INDIE STARS ADD PIZAZZ TO NINETEEN YEAR OLD FESTIVAL
Story & Photos: Catherine Goh (Sydney)
My sincere apologies for the delay in the getting this story up.
Anyways, first things first. The event started at 10am, but I think it started a bit earlier, as by the time I arrived there for my duty, most of the morning performances were finished. Again, I apologize for not being on time from the start of the event. My duty was to start at 11, but I was half an hour late. I had a late night the night before, and failed to hear my alarm in the morning, which made me wake up at 11am! >.< Duty starts at 11am, I just woke up! LOL
Oops, went a little off point, but back to the event. I was in charge of the information booth, so was helping them distribute booklets of the event and also help sell raffle tickets. Oh wait, speaking about raffles, I must tell you guys what amazing prizes they had!!!
The grand prize was a Sony Vaio! They also had a return ticket back to KL, and some MSD’s (Malaysian Students Department in Australia) daughter or VIP won it, like what the hell?? Give us the ticket lah, they can afford a ticket and yet they have to win, so unfair!!! I know a lot of my friends spent like 100+ bucks just to increase their chances of winning…even I myself bought 70 raffles!!! Other than that, they also had a canon printer, and a canon camera up for grabs! As I just bought my new CANON camera not many weeks back, and I do have a printer from a friend who I managed to get free, those prizes were not bothered with, ha ha Other minor prizes were food vouchers and 400 (200x2) movie vouchers! Majority of us won 10 (5x2) movie vouchers and managed to cover our cost mind you, one student ticket here to watch a movie cost us 14aud! So if we win more than 10tickets, managed to cover our cost
At the end of the day, I managed to win 10movie vouchers and 40 food vouchers. Im quite happy nonetheless…Now, back to the event, I did not really pay much attention to the whole event, honestly, but I will tell you guys what I remember the most. There were many food stalls present, such as Mamak, Penang Hawker, Café Kasturi, Asian Fusion, Hometown Recipe, Abang Sam, Sydney Kopitiam, Sally’s Kitchen, Ayam Brand & 100Plus as our drink sponsor! How I miss 100plus, and it was a sunny day, what other way than enjoying a drink of 100plus and sitting on the park with friends and live entertainment, ahhh bliss
My friend was feeling so generous, and decided to get me lunch, how nice of him Got myself a nasi lemak, and boy, how I missed nasi lemak so much! That was really the best one I’ve tasted in Sydney thus far The afternoon went by pretty fast, but we were “blessed” with the most “awesome-est” weather on that day! LOL Although it was sunny, and it did not rain at all, which was a good thing, but the downside was, it was so freaking windy! Everything was flying, and you know how irritating it gets when you’re trying to eat and the wind just blows your hair to your face, and whatever your eating will get onto your hair? OMG! That was just horrible!!!!!! I heard one of the guys at the stalls got splashed with oil just because of the wind while cooking satay or something…gee, stupid wind! Mind you, that day was just one of the really crazy windy days ever in Sydney :S and it had to be on this very nice Sunday morning
Finished my duty, had lunch, and was just chilling out at the park. The first performance I managed to catch was Rashdan Harith’s. Earlier part of the morning, performances such as Chinese fan dance, joget, classical Indian dance and silat was part of the agenda for the day. I also managed to see the fashion show, comprising of my friends wearing different costumes such as cheongsam, baju kebaya, saree and many others. It was really nice to see them all dressed up and doing the cat walk on stage haha ;D ;D
Rashdan Harith sang quite a few songs that day…I seriously could not keep count of how many songs all of them performed individually, so forgive me for that too There were a few lucky draws in between the performances as well. Next up, Reza Salleh gave his all on a few songs, Malay and English. Not bad I must say…They also had a dikir barat, which really brought back memories of me doing it for World Youth Day last year in Australia. Oh sorry to go a little off topic, but World Youth Day is a Catholic event for all youths who gathered in Sydney for this big event, and to represent Malaysia, a few of us from Malalysia put up a Dikir Barat for the event.
Next up, it was our dearest Liyana Fizi from Estrella. She was ever so pretty and great that day. I do know she had a lot supporters that day, many people ran to the front just to sing along with her and to take pictures. It was also the same for One Buck Short, but even crazier, more on that later. One Buck Short was the last to perform, as the saying goes, safe the best for last So I managed to get upclose and personal with the other 3 who performed first.
Rashdan said he really liked the crowd and the atmosphere. It was really great to see so many Malaysians and also non-Malaysians in the park, eating all our local delights and enjoying themselves. He was also in charge of recording the main performances of the event that day. Moving on to Reza Salleh, he feels thankful for getting the chance to come here and perform for all the Malaysians in Sydney. He also loved the crowd and the turn out of the event. On the other hand, our dear Liyana said it really makes people feel at home having this sort of event annually. It is a good way to promote Malaysian culture to people here in Australia and also for us Malaysians to be together and have fun. All 3 of them agreed that it definitely makes us feel at home, especially for those who feel home sick Now just to add some spice, I must tell you guys how surprised they were, especially Rashdan & Liyana when I introduced myself as a rep of Rentak, under Dragon & Anas. hahaha Liyana was telling me how supportive you guys are towards her events, and everytime she performs or something, you guys are always invited to cover the event Unfortunately, Reza did not know what Rentak is, so me being me, explained what it is and also took his email add, to forward the link of Rentak to him. He was very happy to hear there was such a forum like this to keep in touch with things haha
Finally, after moments of waiting, One Buck Short performed. Wow, trust me, when they came out, the whole park went WILD! OMG, it just reminded me of those concerts in Malaysia where everyone will just scream and go crazy together!!! They sang the most songs among 4 of them, Liyana sang 4, 3 English and 1 malay if im not mistaken. But I must agree, the atmosphere of them performing at the park was just awesome! I can understand why everyone was really into their songs and screaming especially the Malays laaa hahaha XD After their performance, I had to wait for them to take 123456789 pictures with whoever was on stage. Everyone who was involved in the event had to go up and sing the final song, Satu Malaysia. And everyone took the opportunity to talk to them just after the song. Normal laaa kan? XP I feel the interview I did was really stupid and a waste of their time, but at least I got to ask them what they felt about the event and what they think about the crowd. They said they love the crowd toooo! Hahaha, well I couldn’t agree with them more that people were jumping around along with them, and also how awesome the event was (ie the food, the people and the atmosphere). Oh yes, they mentioned how nice it was to see all the Malaysians here in Sydney doing these sort of events and celebrating events that we celebrate at home, making us feel at home. And not forgetting, they said it was cool for me to cover for Rentak, as they know Dragon & Anas very well too
All in all, it was an awesome event I would say. Jenny, the CEP of the event did an amazing job, and everything was a success! Getting a chance to meet the 4 of them who came here to perform was cool, and was such fun! Thanks to Dragon for giving me this opportunity, and I hope to cover more events for you guys in the future. Provided I get the media tags and stuff? Haha
On a another note, this marks the 19th Malaysia Fest held in Sydney, and I’m so proud to be a part of this!!
Pictures will be uploaded soon, still trying to compile everything! There was a crazy amount of cameras on duty that day!!
much love
