Who will be Hong Kong's Next Top Model?
Grasshopper, Canto pop's most celebrated trio hopped into town recently to promote their upcoming “Right Now In Concert 2010” scheduled for 23rd January 2010. Edmond So Chi Wai, and brothers Calvin Choy Yat Chi & Remus Choy Yat Kit who make up the aging but dynamic trio, still looked young, fresh and fit as they came out to meet the media at a press conference held at the Palace Of The Golden Horses, recently, to promote their upcoming concert.
The well attended media event was hosted by radio deejay Tai Poe from 988 FM who plunged quickly into the Q&A session by asking the stars, about their emotional and tear dropping moments during their recent concert in Taiwan. Remus from the trio, contended that they had not been to Taiwan for a while and their very first album was also launched in Taiwan, therefore they have many fond memories there and also missed the many fans that have supported them for so long in Taiwan, causing them to be very emotional during that concert.
To another question raised by the host on how they managed to stay together for so long, Calvin who was still maintaining his long shiny locks, joked that both, Edmond and Remus must have owed him a lot during their previous lives so they were destined to be together. On a more serious note, Calvin iterated that God had fated them to be together. They had formed the group in 1985 and would be celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2 weeks and this meant that they had spent a quarter of their lifetime together. Edmond further expressed that they were very different from other groups and like married couples, they occasionally quarreled among themselves but at the end of the day it was for the good of the group and they always made up after. They are very frank and open with each other and they understand and accept each other’s strengths and also weaknesses.
Calvin said, when they first followed Anita Mui to perform in Malaysia in 1986, their performance was so well received,
that many fans had written to Anita Mui’s recording company requesting them to come out with an album for them. Calvin continued by saying that it was largely due to the overwhelming requests and unrelenting support of the Malaysian fans that gave them an opportunity to come out with a debut album and the rest was history.
The trio has recently launched their latest compilation album, “The Legendary Red Album”, to commemorate their 25th anniversary with Calvin writing one brand new song for it. It was very magnanimous of them to request that the new song be played during the press conference so that the attending media could have a listen. Edmond told the audience that Calvin had also designed a head gear and a tee shirt to commemorate their anniversary. Calvin quickly requested that one of his crew members who was wearing the tee to stand up and showcase it so that everyone could see the design. Calvin further explained that he changed the two “s” alphabets from “Grasshopper” to “2" & "5” to denote their 25th anniversary and they might be coming out with more items later on.
During the light hearted media session, Remus was asked if he was going to wear the 5” high heels during the concert. Remus tactfully thanked everyone for being so concerned about him wearing high heels and expressed that to him it is about being fashionable as long as there was no hindrance during the performance. Remus remarked that they would definitely be dressed in very elaborate and flamboyant costumes during their Malaysian concert. Calvin commented all these were done for the sake of entertainment and also as a tribute to their “sifu” Anita Mui Yim Fong. Calvin added that both Anita Mui Yim Fong and Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing have taught them so much over the years and they would be doing a tribute session during the concert to share with the audience what their music is all about.
To a question on whether this is the first time they will be having a concert on a beach, Calvin replied in the affirmative and said they are really looking forward to it. They also have a dress code for all attending concert goers ... "come in your red bikinis!! Or if you don’t have bikinis, just come in anything red or you can even paint your body red". Edmond added that there are a 3 must brings to their concerts. Firstly, concert goers must bring water because there will be lots of dancing and singing the whole night through. Secondly, they must bring extra clothing because there will be lots of sweat after all the singing and dancing and thirdly, they must bring perfume to disguise the sweaty smell after the concert. Remus was quick to add that perhaps they should come out with their own line of perfume with the other two immdiately nodding their approval in unison.
The host went on to ask whether they would get too excited and start taking off their shirts. Remus was quick to disclose they cannot do that in Malaysia, but teasingly said that they cannot stop the fans from pulling off their shirts. The host asked what would happen when the fans do that and Remus funnily added that his 8 packs of muscles will be exposed. Calvin quipped that he only had a 6 pack to show and Edmond was more modest saying that we shall only find out on that night.
On and ending note, the host asked what their wish for the New Year is and Edmond said that he wished for good health and peace on earth. Remus said that he has the same two wishes but added that he hoped that they can start a Grasshopper School to teach dancing and education to kids. Calvin wished that all of us can do our part to save the environment and make the world a better place for our children.
On a final note, Remus told everyone that they will be giving their all during the concert and will put into use all of the experiences they have garnered throughout the years of performing to make it a tremendously enjoyable & electrifying night for all.
