NME Top 100 Tracks Of The Decade
One of my most revered magazines, NME (New Musical Express) announced today (25/11/09 in the UK) their top 100 tracks of the decade. All tracks on the list were chosen by a poll voted for by the staff at NME, NME.COM, NME TV and NME Radio.
The biggest shocker (to me at least), was finding Beyonce's 'Crazy In Love' at the top of that list and being described by the mag as "a dance floor-destroying howitzer of a pop song". Say whaaaat??? A quick check on my date app on my Windows task bar confirmed it was certainly not time for an April fool prank by Britain's most prolific & respected, 56 year old music magazine.
Utter disbelief!!! How could any self respecting music magazine even consider that song for the pinnacle. How credible can their top 100 list be after that debacle? What could have compelled so many smart music devouring staffers to pick such an overly engineered number to even grace their top 100 list, let alone, helm it. Or am I just too quick to dismiss the selection. Maybe, there's something there in that song that I missed. Or, perhaps there are more boo boos in their tabulations? Yikes!!!
To be fair, we decided that perhaps we should look more thoroughly at their top 100 picks, and debate it further before drawing to any conclusions. Perhaps we should just drop the list here and see what our viewers think about it. Better still, we at Rentak Sejuta, should go through it with a fine tooth comb, and state our case.
Anyway here's NME's top 20 songs of the decade for us to muddle over first:
1. Beyonce – 'Crazy In Love'
2. MGMT – 'Time To Pretend'
3. The Strokes – 'Hard To Explain'
4. MIA – 'Paper Planes'
5. OutKast – 'Hey Ya!'
6. The Rapture – 'House Of Jealous Lovers'
7. Klaxons – 'Golden Skans'
8. Blur – 'Out Of Time'
9. Arcade Fire – 'Rebellion (Lies)'
10. Arctic Monkeys – 'A Certain Romance'
11. The Libertines – 'Can’t Stand Me Now'
12. The Streets – 'Dry Your Eyes'
13. The Walkmen – 'The Rat'
14. The White Stripes – 'Seven Nation Army'
15. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 'Bang'
16. Rihanna – 'Umbrella'
17. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – 'Maps'
18. OutKast – 'Ms Jackson'
19. Radiohead – 'Reckoner'
20. Hot Chip – 'Over And Over'
Beyonce’s finest single was released in 2003 to universal acclaim, shooting to the top spot in America and the UK and picking up two Grammy Awards along the way. Built around a horn sample from ' 1970 hit ‘Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So)’ and featuring a rap from boyfriend Jay-Z... - NME
Let the debate begin.
