“His appearance is an achievement of development of Korean jazz which no one had predicted, and his album will be a classic of Korean jazz.” Duk Ho Hwang, Music Critic
Saxophonist Kim Oki is the shorter version of the name, Okinawa Kim, a nickname which YoungHoon Kim gave himself as he loves the view and the people of Okinawa in Japan who believe in freedom and peace. In his younger days, Kim was a b boy and also a back-up dancer for some famous Korean Artists like Sech Kies, Ku Bon Seung, etc. and was into rock and hip hop music.
In 2009, Kim Oki started to play saxophone in some small clubs and was a member of the improvisation project, SMFM, led by percussionist Jae Chun Park. It was there that Oki met bass player Sung Bae Kim and they founded an independent label called ILIL Sound which published Kim Oki’s first album – “Cherubim’s Wrath” based on the novel “The Ball Shot By A Midget” written by Joe Sae Hee in June 2009. The album received the Best Jazz and Crossover performance of Korean Music Award in the same year.
Kim Oki’s style of music has been describe as “unpredictable avant garde” music which he uses to tell interpret stories close to his heart. His second album “Tumultuous Time Travel” is about historical events in Korea that are forced to be erased but shouldn’t be.
Beside Kim Oki on saxophone, the other members of the band are Wonsool Lee (bass), Ji Ha Park (piri, taepeongso, voice) and Gyujae Lee (flute)
James Boyle Trio ft Liyana Fizi & Bihzhu
A Penang Island Jazz Festival initiative - The James Boyle Trio featuring Liyana Fizi and Bihzhu will be performing songs from one of Penang’s most illustrious musical sons – The Late Jimmy Boyle. A rather special segment of this year’s festival’s programme as it will be “James Boyle playing the songs of Jimmy Boyle” – a son’s tribute to his father’s music!
Anchoring the trio is one of Malaysia’s most respected and revered arrangers/bass players in the Malaysian music industry since the 1980s – Ruslan Imam. On drums is his son Ruvi Ruslan, a music composition graduate from UiTM who is the Founder “No Noise Percussion” and also plays drums for “Go Gerila!” Aizat Amdan, Amir Jahari amongst others.
On the piano is Boh Cameronian Award winning Music Director, James P.S. Boyle, a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and music lecturer at ASWARA who has performed in various Jazz festivals in the Asian region. An active composer in the corporate and theatre world, James is a Certified Movie director and a Line Producer from the Hollywood Film Institute and also the author of ‘Putera Puteri The Music and the legacy of Jimmy Boyle’.
Joining the Trio are two very talented Vocalists who have made incredible strides not only in the local music industry but have performed in international music festivals in Korea and China - composer, singer/songwriter Liyana Fizi and Penang’s own songbird – Bihzhu.
Timo Vollbrecht : Fly Magic
Saxophonist, Timo Vollbrecht creates his musical stories right at the explosive intersection of various musical styles and cultural diversity. With his quartet FLY MAGIC, he merges elements from contemporary jazz, post-rock, minimalism, new music and experimental soundscapes and through this confluence of influences, the music of Timo Vollbrecht manages to transcend the limitations of musical genres.
Together with his longtime partner-in-crime, German-Japanese guitarist Keisuke Matsuno, he formed an ensemble that draws from the urban sounds of their cities Berlin and New York. Completing this line up is one of New York’s most in demand bass players and a graduate from Manhattan School of Music - Martin Nevin and Berlin-based drummer Sebastian Merk, a professor for jazz drums at the Conservatory in Dresden.
Their widely celebrated album, Fly Magic, was released in March 2016 and was subsequently elected Jazz Album of the Week by Germany’s public radio NDR.
Timo Vollbrecht Fly Magic’s appearance at The Penang island Jazz Festival is supported by Goethe Institut Malaysia
Jashua Davis
Speaking or singing, the voice of Joshua Davis is a disarming instrument: weathered and warm, as capable of conjuring confessional intimacy on a global stage as it is of making a small room, well off the beaten path, resonate with startling urgency and power. Couple it with an earnest poetic sensibility, a boundless work ethic, and an uncanny gift for connecting with audiences spanning generations.
Over the past fifteen years, Michigan-based Davis has honed an impressive range of skills – songwriter, bandleader, guitarist, and vocalist among them – in the most honest possible fashion exploring the common thread connecting folk, blues, jazz, ragtime, and country forms – discovering his personal perspective as a composer in the process. His versatility and ravenous musical curiosity has resulted in a divergent output, from his five albums with roots rock outfit Steppin’ In It to the vintage swing styles documented on the album he recorded with Shout Sister Shout. But Davis’s sensibility shines brightest on his trio of solo albums, each a thoughtful dispatch on life, love, change, and growth, culminating with 2013’s A Miracle of Birds.
Joshua’s rise to international fame came when he auditioned for the 8th season (2015) of “The Voice”. From his first performance, Davis triumphed, and over the course of the season, his rootsy, sincere approach emerged as a refreshing alternative and propelled him all the way to finals. Joshua is currently working on a new album which will be released soon.
Marutyri
A Rotterdam based, fusion band, Marutyri’s deep and solid grooves, intense harmonies, story telling solos and the well-arranged parts, make them unique in today’s tougher-than-ever music world.
The founders of the band became friends back in 2011 whilst studying at Codarts - the conservatory of Rotterdam. After individually going through various different bands and projects, they decided to team up, make and produce their own fusion style music.
Formed in September 2014, the band got off to a flying start when they released their first EP “The First One” and in the following year (2015), performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, won the prestigious NPO Radio 6 Soul & Jazz Award for Best Talent and were invited a number of times to appear on the popular Dutch TV-show “De Wereld Draait Door”. Their 2nd EP “The Tribe” was released in June 2015 to critical acclaim and on April 7th 2016, the band released their album: “Inner Movements”.
Marutyri is Rik van der Ouw (bass guitar, synth bass), Ruud van Halder (guitars), Thijmen Oberink (keyboards), Maurice Slot (drums), Roy Gielesen (percussions), Dennis te Woerd (tenor saxophone), Floris Windey (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Yiannis Marinos (trombone).
