Nina And The Butterfly Fish
Nina and The Butterfly Fish’s Appearance at The 12th Penang Island Jazz Festival 2015 is Supported By The Royal Norwegian Embassy and Jazz Norsk Jazzforum.
The band gets its name from a real creature – but a real creature that Nina Linge had invented and painted long before she ever learned of its actual existence. Composer/guitarist/singer Nina and bassist Dan Sunland met at the Trondheim Jazz Conservatory where their shared enthusiasms were encouraged and given space to grow and 2 years down the line, a chance encounter with Hans HulbÆkmo completed the group.
Seriously playful and playfully serious, Nina and the Butterfly Fish craft songs as if from Lego bricks with the instructions thrown away: brightly coloured, surprisingly shaped, adventurous and fragile – but locking together perfectly at every turn. It’s complex and surprising – but always accessible, bright, welcoming and, above all, fun.

Darrin Rozells
Liyana Fizi plays stripped back acoustic tunes tinged with a mix of pop, folky and jazzy accents. The singer/songwriter, who has performed in a number of local and international festivals, started her musical journey as one of the founding members of Malaysian indie-pop band Estrella. Everyday musings and inward thoughts are the main elements of her music, using simplicity as the main staple.
Sharing the stage with her as a first-time-pairing on a couple of songs is Penang born self-taught guitarist, Darrin Rozells, who at the age of 10 picked up the guitar and made music his career playing with groups in venues and events all over Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Pulau Langkawi.
The Fingerstyle Guitar Hub
Brent Chong
Brian Gan
Sheila Julis
Victor Ng
Formed by a community of guitar players in Penang who share a common interest in fingerstyle guitar music performance, appreciation and education who occasionally come together to organise events to cultivate an awareness and promote this style of playing to the masses. Members of the Hub that will be performing are Victor Ng, who took up classical guitar lessons at the age of 17 but switched his style of playing after being influenced by a roommate who introduced him to fingerstyle playing.
Brian Gan’s first instrument was the piano (not his instrument of choice) which he gave up after 8 years and out of curiosity, he picked up his father’s guitar and started strumming which then led him on a “new” musical journey and has never looked back. Influenced by fingerstyle greats, Brent Chong started playing and exploring techniques on the guitar and is currently giving lessons. A self-taught guitarist, Sheila Julis is one of the few female (if not the only) fingerstyle players in the country and was recently programmed in the Malaysia International Fingerstyle Guitar Festival 2015 alongside highly acclaimed international artistes.

Penang Musical Heritage Talk
6.00pm – 7.30pm, Thursday, 4th December, 2015 @ Bayview Beach Resort Ballroom Foyer. Admission: FREE
A Talk on the idea, concept and design of the book “Just For The Love Of It” Penang’s Popular Music 1930s – 1960s by James Lochhead, Adrian Cheah and Paul Augustin.
The Book:
“Just For The Love Of It” Penang’s Popular Music 1930s – 1960s was launched in April 2015.
A beautifully designed book, extensively illustrated with photographs and advertisements and other graphics ‘of the time’, full of fun and celebration. The pages of Just for the Love of It weave together the strands of the story of Penang’s popular music by locating the wonderful stories of the musicians and the bands within the context of Penang’s overall history.
The book highlights the diversity of communities that makes up Penang’s demographics and the different traditions they imported; the influence of political events including the impact of the British and the Japanese administrations and the first decade of Independence; the role of technology in defining and transmitting popular music, including radio, cinema, and TV; the role of the key venues at which popular music could be found, including religious, community and leisure sites; the way popular music worked across the different ethnic communities and the influence of different indigenous traditions like ronggeng, joget, bangsawan, boria, chinese opera, dondang sayang, and different Indian traditions; and the impact of commercialisation and consumerism, including the increasing globalisation of latest (Western) hits and the fashions and lifestyles that went with them.
It captures the many tensions and fusions that informed the years under consideration, and most of all celebrates the result of all the influences, the music and musicianship of Penang.

Julia Biel
Julia Biel’s Appearance at The 12th Penang Island Jazz Festival 2015 is Supported By The British Council.
Self-taught singer and songwriter, pianist and guitarist with a sharp perspective on life and love, a voice as electrifying as it is hypnotic, and a fondness for pop song structures as much as for jazz harmony, Julia Biel, who has been tipped as ‘the best British vocalist to emerge in an age’ by THE INDEPENDENT, inhabits distinctive musical territory combining the raw emotional power of her old-school-jazz-sounding vocal with backdrops that include elements of 1960s psychedelia, electronica-imbued acoustics, driving electric guitars and epic, cinematic arrangements.
A former Perrier Jazz Vocalist of the Year winner, Julia’s credits also include a nomination in the ‘Rising Star’ category of the BBC Jazz Awards, a MOBO nomination and an Urban Music Award nomination. She released her debut album “Not Alone” in 2005 followed by her second album “Love Letters and Other Missiles” in 2015. Julia is joined by Edward Hick on drums and Ben Hazleton on bass.

6.00pm – 8.00pm, Thursday 3rd December, 2015 @ 23 Love Lane
Located in the historic setting of Georgetown, this year’s festival opens with an acoustic concert at 23 Love Lane featuring Liyana Fizi with Darrin Rozells and members of Penang’s Fingerstyle Guitar Hub – Sheila Julis, Victor Ng, Brian Gan and Brent Chong
Liyana Fizi

FuNkCoustics
Hailing from the island of Penang, FuNkCoustics is an acoustic duo comprising of Darrin Rozells and Alvin Chong. Coming from a musical background where his parents were both involved in the music scene, Darrin picked up the guitar at a young age and without formal lessons, experimented and developed his fingerstyle playing rapidly. 2012 saw Darrin teaming up with Alvin, a vocalist with a raspy yet smooth soulful voice with the aspiration of being a recording artist. This combination saw long hours on rearranging songs to creating their own sound which led to them performing in many venues and events all over the island and other parts of Malaysia.
