When: 10.00pm, Friday & Saturday, 27th & 28th March, 2015
What is Songwriters Playground?
A show where songwriters not only play their best tried and tested material but they also have the opportunity to perform new songs they’re working on – a sneak preview of things to come! As the best music is created not just at home but also on stage, this setting curated by Az Samad allows songwriters to share their work on stage with their creative peers.
Join Az Samad and his special guests in a songwriter’s round style performance. Each performer will take turns sharing their songs and expect fun banter in between. This is acoustic music at its best, intimate and delivered straight to your heart.
Az Samad
Guitarist-Composer-Educator Az Samad has performed in the United States, Europe and Asia. A versatile musician who has appeared on seventeen CDs (eight of which are his solo releases), Az has worked with Grammy winners Flaco Jiménez and Max Baca, drummer Bernie Dresel (Brian Setzer Orchestra), singer-songwriters Tara Linda and Reza Salleh, guitarists Mike Dawes, John Stowell, Adam Rafferty, Stuart Ryan, and Teja Gerken; world music ensemble Bogofusion; electronic jazz-funk group Planet Loop; Cumbia-Dub band Candelaria; and string jazz ensemble JazzMine. Az has been invited to perform as the opening act for concerts by Tommy Emmanuel and Martin Taylor. Az was also selected as one of the presenters for TEDxKL 2013 which was the largest TEDx in South East Asia to date.
Reza Salleh
One of the top names in the Malaysia’s acoustic scene, Reza Salleh has been called the quintessential singer-songwriter by his audience and peers alike, a title he lives up to with his personal brand of alternative acoustic folk rock. He is a central figure in Malaysia's thriving singer-songwriter circuit and is often seen in an intimate, solo acoustic format or backed by a tight, dynamic full-piece band. His music, despite early influences by the Seattle grunge scene and the vocal stylings of African-American artists, is a diverse mix and is rarely limited by genre or tone.
He has performed in a number of countries outside Malaysia, including Australia (Melbourne, Sydney & Tasmania), Laos, Singapore, Thailand, Korea (Seoul & Busan), Japan (Fukuoka, Oita, Nagasaki, Kokura, Kumamoto, Kurosaki) and Indonesia.
He has performed at one of the most prestigious and largest concert halls in the South East Asian region, the PETRONAS Philharmonic Hall (Dewan Filharmonik Petronas) to a sold out hall, receiving a standing ovation for his 9-piece ensemble showcase.
In September 2011 Reza was invited to play the mainstage at the 19th Annual Sunset Live, one of the biggest music festivals in Japan. He was the first Malaysian to do so and the slot served as an anchor for a month long tour through Korea and Japan.
In November 2011 Reza’s debut album Realize won the award for Best Engineered Album at Malaysia’s Anugerah Industri Musik (Malaysian’s version of the Grammys). He also received nominations for Best New Artiste, Best Vocal Performance Male and 2 nominations for Best English Song.
He has toured Japan (and occasionally Korea) at least once a year since 2011 and most recently played a featured act showcase at the Haeundae Culture Centre in Busan, Korea as well as slots at the annual Nakasu Jazz Festival, Yamakasa Festival Music Showcase and Asia Music Find Festival in Japan for the year 2014.
