Did Malaysia vote wisely? (Episode 17 ¡V Top 3)
Wow!! What a dramatic episode. But I am probably one of the very few who wasn¡¦t shocked to see Dayang out. Even before the show started I stated that it would be Dayang or Faizal who might find themselves in the bottom 2, and either of them could easily be out. I was not overly concerned about Dayang as somehow I was almost certain that she would get the most out votes. I feared most for Faizal, as I was worried that his fans may get complacent and not rally enough behind him and make him safe. I also knew Suki would be safe with absolute certainty, which was why I was so excited and was already celebrating when Faizal was asked to stand together with Suki during the results. Never really wondered about Alif as I somehow knew he would be in the top 3. A lot of people have been underestimating the support he has and the momentum it¡¦s picking up. Don¡¦t even be surprised if he wins OIAM let alone be in the top 2. It even has Paul Moss thinking what to do with him, should he win it.
During the press conference with Dayang after the show, 8TV¡¦s business development manager, was saying that results were a surprise and that Malaysian viewers have to vote wisely, otherwise results like what had transpired were inevitable. To which I quickly shot, ¡§Are you saying that Malaysian¡¦s did not vote wisely?¡¨ I can¡¦t even remember the answer she gave me. Either it was a whole lot of babble or I couldn¡¦t even been bothered to hear her answer. Whatever it was, I knew very well that Malaysia DID vote wisely, and as such it didn¡¦t really matter, anymore. I am only surprised it didn¡¦t happen earlier.
It took some time for the loss to sink in for the normally confident & composed Dayang, as she only broke down once she started singing and could not find the words to fill the music. But with the sincere support of her 3 other fellow contestants, she managed to pull off one of the finest & most engaging performances of the competition albeit being a little too late. I am certain everyone in the audience felt it including yours truly. It even gave both the Rays goose bumps, which is saying a lot. It¡¦s a pity it didn¡¦t happen earlier or she would have even had my support.
More drama unfolded as the show progressed when Paul said ¡§Listen to the Talking Clamshell¡¨ to Syafinaz, which made her stand up and leave, apparently offended by his remarks. As she disappeared behind the stunned audience, the few of us observant fellas, could see her clearly trying to hold in her grin. It was so staged even though Paul denied it when I asked him. Didn¡¦t fool us one bit. But good drama for the show, though. We however were pretty offended with Syafinaz when she said that Paul did not know how to ¡§berbudi bahasa¡¨ after he apologized to her, after many weeks of her not being ¡§berbudi bahasa¡¨ with Paul. Of course, Paul being Paul just took it all in his stride, mostly perhaps he didn¡¦t understand all the impolite rebukes uttered by her in Malay.
How did the contestants fair this week. Faizal was outstanding, and surprised everybody when he took it slow with, not one but two ballads, cleverly designed to show everyone that he is just not all about jumping around, and he truly does have the talent to sing and perform engagingly even at near standstill. Even with slow numbers, it was evident that his raw energy was still abundant and all encompassing, and had the audience soaking it all in, even though the judges may have not been totally impressed. Paul may have thought that Faizal had strayed from his brand, but Faizal was merely showing that he is more than capable of jumping around and being original in his musical arrangements, but can also stretch his vocals to the max within his own spectrum. Which, I believe he did well enough, and definitely pleased most of the audience, if not all, as was seen by the rousing cheers that was heard. And yes, he is obviously fishing for votes. Duh, Paul!!! Remember, not all your advice has been good for the contestants. Trying to make Dayang who she is not, has had its negative effects already. And there is nothing wrong with Faizal fishing for votes; everyone else has already been doing it? Even Alif did it this week, with his excellent and emotional 2nd performance, complete with hand signing as well. Even I was sufficiently moved although it was a little contrived. Can¡¦t fault his execution at all, though. Looking into the audience I noticed how much his dad supports him, as his dad was seen conducting his entire son¡¦s performance from right where he was sitting, complete with singing & signing as well. That¡¦s how much En. Satar believes in his son, and I was very moved by it. I don¡¦t think many in the audience saw it, since they were being vowed by Alif. All I can say is Alif is one equally smart boy who may just make it into the final 2 and I wouldn¡¦t be at all surprised if he clinched the OIAM title. Favourite Suki, is obviously more aware this week of what the stakes are as she has finally realized that she needs more than just fan support to make it to the top, and has stopped taking it all in her stride. I believe she has focused a lot more and managed to deliver a more relaxed, open and fun performance this week, although she did sound a little shouty at times. But that¡¦s not gonna hurt her at all. Whether she wins this competition on her popularity or her performances, there is no doubt that she does have talent. My only objection is that she has not been consistent throughout, and still has a long way to go before her talent is properly harnessed, and presented to the masses. I also think it is way too soon for her to win a million RM, and as she may not truly understand and appreciate its significance, and make effective use of it. It takes a lot of discipline & hard work to be a star, even with a million RM. Win or loose, I am certain that she will still be contracted to 8TV¡¦s record label Monkey Bone and be groomed into a star in due course.
The good news is the competition really got on its way this week. Predictably, everyone is expecting Suki to walk away with the RM 1 M but somehow I don¡¦t think it¡¦s gonna be as easy as that. It¡¦s not that she doesn¡¦t deserve it. Quite the contrary. In fact Suki probably has the most potential and is finally beginning to show her stripes. But I think the other 2 are not far behind, especially Alif. Its no doubt that he has the talent and can definitely sing, and has been slowly been amassing a wealth of fans that are supporting him, even more so after Paul¡¦s ¡§insulting¡¨ comments earlier. Even Paul has admitted that they could market & brand him as a theatre/musical star ala ¡§Disney¡¦s High School Musical¡¨ (as expressed to Paul by several Jacsville/RS seniors) rather than a straightforward recording artist. Thanks Paul for listening to us and using our comments on the show. Of course, multi talented Faizal is doing Suki no favours either, by constantly reinventing himself and showing us that he too, deserves, to win the RM 1 M. I guess the final episode is going to be truly interesting with perhaps some explosive results. As far as I am concerned, the slates are all clean again, and everyone is playing on a level playing field. Suki is not going to win this just because she is cute & sweet, as Alif is equally as sweet & cute too and has legions of fans to prove it. And Mr. Sexy Superman ain¡¦t doing too badly at all in the looks department either. This is a fight to the finish and all 3 have the persona and talent to be an idol. As for me, a fair result would be a straight fight between Faizal & Suki, and hope the fans eventually decide based on their performances, talent, work ethics, passion and ultimately their commitment to their art and what they will accomplish should they be given the RM 1 M. Although, it¡¦s apparent that I am rooting for Faizal, as I sincerely think that he deserves to win the most as he is the most complete of the three, I would not at all be disgruntled should either Alif or Suki win.
Whatever the results, I am sure Malaysia would have voted wisely.
