For once, I actually enjoyed Dayang's performance. "Fever" was definitely a big step up for her. Visibly missing was her nasal tone that we have been subjected to for the last few weeks. Aubrey must be a genius. However, her second performance was too contrived and looked like a half baked attempt to be Mary J. Blige or any one of the millions of black female R&B singers. It wasn't bad and I have no doubt she has the range and the ability to work her vocals, and deliver the goods, but she is not bringing anything new or original to the table. There is just nothing spectacularly original about her. And I still hate that stilted arm punching in the air that she does. It so unnatural.
Same goes to Suki (being unspectacular, not the arm punching). We all know she can sing and can be a great singer someday. But that day is not today or even 6 weeks from now. I also do not see the direction she is heading either. What does Suki Low wanna be? After so many weeks I think the viewers deserve to know. Paul is right that at 16 she herself doesn't know just yet and thats the dilemma. And one more thing, can someone teach her how to dance. She looks really awkward when she moves about.
If we could hear angels sing they would sound like Azfar. He has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard in this country. This dude doesnt need OIAM at all to make it big. One day he will be bigger than his mentor M. Nasir. But unfortunately for him he will not being seeing any of the OIAM prize money to get him there, as he has not connected enough with the viewers, and will most likely see himself out the door, shortly. Perhaps, he just picked the wrong competition to launch himself. He could have easily trounced everybody in the AF series including and especially Mawi. Its a pity M. Nasir chose to give Mawi "Aduh Soleha" instead of Azfar. Azfar would have taken that song to a different level. His performances this week, while vocally & technically sound, was lazy and clumsy at best. Sadly next week may just see the end of him in OIAM.
I agree with Syafinaz on one point. Alif has charisma. If there was a contest for charisma Alif would win hands down. He must have inherited it from his number 1 fan, his handsome dad, En Satar. My biggest concern now is that Alif may just win this competiton riding on that alone, and not by his singing talent. His performances today, although vocally fine, were quite forgetable, but I am almost certain he will be back to do it again next week.
Everytime Faizal Tahir gets on stage, I am one step closer to being certain that he will be the eventual winner (even though he may have found himself in the bottom 4 this week). No one deserves this more than him. Period. Predictable or not, he knows exactly what he wants and how to get it. Two safe, highly charged, entertaining and commited performances from him. I, however, hope to see something different next week though. I also hope his fans are not complacent and over confident, and start to ease up on the voting like they did this week.
Farah looked absolutely gorgeous this week, and, gave a strong and stiring performance on both songs. I love Farah's bold low registers, but somehow she seems to flatten out when she peaks at the top. Her top notes don't seem to be musical at all. That is something she really needs to work on. Her biggest flaw however is her consistency. Another thing that is worrying me, is that she has lost the winner/go gettter look from the previous episodes. Its almost as if she has resigned herself to facing the worst. Come on Farah, get on with it. The competition is not over yet. Don't send the message that you are giving up already. I was so dissapointed to hear from your fans that they were already prepared to see you face the exit. So what, if you are in the bottom again. Jac was there too. Look where she is now. You are one of the only 2 who understand this competition and want it bad enuff. But today when you were standing next to Marion, you looked as if you were the one who got kicked out.
Overall, most of the contestants stepped up their game this week, but was it enough for them to truly deserve getting a million RM prize. I don't think so.
By the way how much would you give Paul Moss to be the judge?
