William Shakespeare's Hamlet @ Stage 2, Penangpac, Straits Quay, Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang, Tanjung Tokong, Penang (12 - 14/12/14)
When: @ 8.30pm, Friday, 12th, 3.00pm & 8.30pm, Saturday, 13th & 11.00am & 5.00pm, Sunday, 14th December, 2014
This adaptation of Hamlet examines issues of evil, madness and revenge through the lens of Malay traditional performance healing. Hamlet, heir to the throne of Denmark is distressed at his father’s unexpected death and his mother’s hasty marriage to his uncle Claudius. His father’s ghost soon reveals to Hamlet that he had been murdered by Claudius using Malay black magic. The ghost of king Hamlet urges young Hamlet to avenge his murder. These all lead to Hamlet’s melancholia or angin in Malay psyche.
The revenge tragedy unfolds when Hamlet receives confirmation of Claudius’ guilt and leads to the accidental killing of the King’s counsellor, Polonius, the subsequent madness and suicide of Polonius’ daughter Ophelia before Hamlet avenges the death of his murdered father.
This unique production challenges conventional staging of Shakespeare through the use of a traverse stage which provokes audience members to react to other audience members’ reactions during the play. The entire experience becomes interdependent between audience and actors, allowing a more intimate interaction with Shakespeare's words. This production also engages with new media, besides incorporating sounds from traditional musical instruments, elements of Malay performance healing and a particular conception of the Malay psyche.
