Penang Tourism brings two nights of Global Music and Culture at the Penang World Music Festival 2015, happening on the 11 & 12 April 2015. The festival will be held at the Esplanade, George Town, Penang.
Music lovers can expect a wide array of musicians from all over the world performing a fusion of traditional and contemporary world music at the UNESCO Heritage City’s most iconic site, the Esplanade.
Aside from the rousing grooves, festival goers can also look forward to get up close and personal with the musicians by attending the complimentary music workshops that will be held at the largest standing 100 year old standing fort in Malaysia, Fort Cornwallis.

Dizu Plaatjies - South Africa
Dizu Plaatjies & Ibumyambo” is a well-known music group from Cape Town, South Africa. Dizu, the lead singer, has performed all over the world for the past 15 years. Just recently, the group performed a Sold-Out show at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York.
Dizu liberally mixes various traditional African instruments and songs with his own original lyrics and melodies. For example on the title track, Ibuyambo, he has arranged a melody from Zimbabwe for marimbas associated with Mozambique and placed a Congolese choir over the instruments. On Equonce, he applies elements of Hip-Hop music and the tongue clicks of the San people, to the rural chant from children’s game. In this way he has created a unique neo-traditional blend of sounds.

Ajinai - Mongolia
Ajinai, formed in Beijing in 2009 and comprised of members culled from across China, is dedicated to bringing traditional Mongolian music into the 21st Century.
The band’s roots are planted firmly in the Mongolian grasslands, but their youth andexperience lends a unique and contemporary twist to the traditional music.
The group’smusic is fueled by two important Mongolian elements: the morin khuur, or horse-headfiddle, a symbol of the Mongolian people, and khoomei, also known as throat-singing, which features the simultaneous sound of several pitches emanating from one voice.

Annuluk - Germany
Annuluk has been around since 2011, their musical styles range from archaic shamanism and temple chants that penetrates the sensitive concerted band and slowly moving up to present urban rhythms and electronic sound design,
They have released two albums so far named “Ushna” and “Malam” along with a bonus cd titled “Metamorphosis”. They have won several awards and recognitions. Among them, they are winner of Creole-central Germany in 2013 and were crowned as best newcomer with the Via Vut Indie Award 2014.

Trad.Attack! - Estonia
Trad.Attack! is a real dance-along turbo-Nordic-folk band,which brings back the energy, purity and sincerity of Estonian folk music.
Trad.Attack! incorporates three skillful superstars of modern folk music. Sandra Sillamaa (Estonian bagpipe, Jew’s harp, saxophone, vocals), Jalmar Vabarna (guitar) and Tõnu Tubli (percussion) are familiar to the audience from numerous bands. As their source of inspiration, the ensemble brings out the superstars of their time, who were accompanied by music at work, home and parties.
The synergy of the three blazes brightly and it is possible that Trad.Attack!’s vital, deeply engineered debut album fitting precisely into the 21st century marks the birth of a new generation in Estonian folk music.

Gus Teja World Music - Bali, Indonesia
Gus Teja World Music is an ethnic music group that blends traditional musical instruments such as slonding, tingklik, drums, and flute, combined with modern musical instruments like guitar and bass guitar. In 2010, Gus Teja’s first album was released with the title “Rhythm of Paradise,” The album has is one of the best selling Albums in Bali – Indonesia. “Razon De Son”, a Cuban/Flamenco band from Spain. The lead of the band none other than is the award winning Raul Rodriquez.
He founded SON DE LA FRONTERA, an acclaimed band that toured intensely the world and received multiple national and international awards They have received the BBC Music Award, the WMCE Award, Award for Best Flamenco soloist and a Grammy Nomination.

Raggy Project - Malaysia
Raggy Project is a Malaysian band of top-class musicians delivering a fusion of East-West music with a Blues flavour. “Western” melodies blending with Indian ragas, Funky grooves flavoured with tablas and Eastern percussions, the band promises highly entertaining shows with great musicianship. Tarabband - Egypt / Sweden
Formed in Malmö 2008, Tarabband hosts some of Sweden’s most skilled folk & world musicians. The group is lead by the charismatic Iraqi Egyptian singer Nadin, who fled war in Iraq to Sweden in 2001. Tarabband’s music and lyrics narrates her journey of survival, exile, life and rebirth. Their debut album ”Ya Sidi” was released in 2013 and contains 10 original compositions. The music travels from Baghdad via Cairo, Paris to Malmo, mixing Sufism, Folk, Flamenco, Jazz and settles in Tarab, the common denominator.

Nading Rhapsody - Malaysia
Nading Rhapsody portrays the Iban ethnic’s mythical story of an extraordinary role model. Nading Rhapsody is an Avant-Garde Borneo Ethnic Music band. The young musicians are Boy Keevin (Composer / Bass Guitar), RaWa (Ruding / Acoustic Guitar/ Sape’), Yen (Gendang Melayu / Tribal Percussion), Roy (Lyrics / Vocal / Chants), Christ (Lyrics / Vocal / Dance) and Opah (Vocal / Chants), Ujang (Bedok / Floortom).

Vedan Kolod - Russia
The Ensemble of Slavonic Ethnic Music Vedan Kolod (meaning ‘Prophetic tree’) was created in February 2005 in Siberia, Russia, by Tatyana Naryshkina. In July of 2005 Vedan Kolod won the prize as the best Russian folk band in the International World Music Festival Ustuu-Huree.
Vedan Kolod composes its own material, but it is based on recent research and analysis carried out by archaeologists and folklore specialists, interpreting events in ancient, pagan Russia before the arrival of Christians
During its history, Vedan Kolod had revived numerous almost forgotten Russian folk instruments: gusli, ocarina, Slavonic drums, Scythian horn, sharkuncy and others, restored, mastered and reconstructed by musical master Valerii Naryshkin.

Celebrating their 13th Anniversary this year, “CASUARINA is one of the most respected Samba Bands in Brazil. Originally from Rio de Janeiro neighborhood Lapa, the band played their repertoire all over the nation and beyond.
They’re brought their “samba made in Brasil” to various countries, including USA, Angola, Belgium, Cuba, France, Holland, Israel, Italu, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK
