If Stevie Wonder equates to ¡°Old Thinking¡±, then Paul Moss equates to what??? (Episode 5)
By the way Stevie Wonder won a Grammy this year, just in case anyone didn¡¯t know. So how old is that? Hmmm. Wait a minute didn¡¯t they feature Stevie on American Idol Season 5. Hmmm. How old is that? Wasn¡¯t it such an insult to hear Paul berate the very talented, soulful and funky Ozie for her choice of a record producer? ¡°Thinking old¡± kot? Macam dia itu muda sangat?
D**n, I would be in seventh heaven if Stevie produced my album, and honestly, so would Paul, and the entire Malaysian music industry. Frankly I thought Paul¡¯s comment was a bit ¡°stone aged¡±. But what do I know, being 42, I probably have ¡°old thinking¡± too. LOL. The sad part is a truly deserving talent (who has fabulous looks as well and a great personality to boot) was shown the door because she was considered over aged thus not marketable. My hats off to her for exiting so gracefully ¨C may she realise her dreams.
I am extremely troubled by the fact that such an awesome venture as OIAM which started with such a grand premise, now seems to have completely lost its direction. I was really looking forward to great things to happen from this new reality show but unfortunately I am not feeling it at all these days. And I don¡¯t think it¡¯s just me. Wasn¡¯t this show supposed to be bold enough to take some raw original talent and nurture them to euphoric success locally & globally? Wasn¡¯t this supposed to be something different? All I am seeing is what seems to be an urbanized version of Akademi Fantasia. By sidelining people with genuine talent such as Russel Curtis (Blues) & Ozie (Soul), OIAM is merely offering us the ¡°same old same old¡±. I am not saying the others are not talented but, I honestly thought the show would live up to its hype and be bold and truly different. It¡¯s not happening. Frankly, should (although I have doubts) Dayang win, I don¡¯t really see her making it big beyond our shores. Even with RM 1 M in hand. Or neither will anyone else currently in the top 20.
Russel Curtis may not have been the greatest of singers but his raw talent seen in totality was way above all. Wasn¡¯t this what it was all about? No point telling people to bring their guitars and telling them you want to see something fresh, and then not measure them in their complicity. This was someone original and with a passion and the judges cut him loose. They should have had the b**ls to put him right through to the Top 12 and let the Malaysian public decide, for a change.
Even, worse, they actually let Ching through, who wasn¡¯t such a great singer neither a great guitarist. She was sweet though. But that¡¯s about it. Hmmm! What was I saying about this a couple of weeks back¡.? Oh well, never mind. Someone might get upset again.
As for the methods employed to gauge the talents, I thought the blind test was a refreshing change, but, unfortunately you could easily tell who the singers were even when they were behind the curtain. Paul & Syafinaz hardly had to guess who the singers were, although they pretended to look unwary. Even I, guessed most of them correctly from just watching at home. I am almost certain everyone here at RS also got it all right. It was just too easy. It would have been interesting if they had done the blind test during the auditions instead or at least in the early elimination rounds. The good news was at least everyone had a distinct and identifiable flavour. The bad news is it didn¡¯t mean all of them were great either. But the good ones probably should have joined AF instead because everyone single one of them could beat the heck out of Mawi, any day, even without going through the requisite academy stages. And there¡¯s a whole lot of millions to earn from that springboard. What I shall call the Power Root generation. LOL.
It was also a novel idea to have a style & personality test but I didn¡¯t really see much sense in having it. The additional judges were only there for window dressing and hardly contributed to the career enhancements of the talents. Honestly what does a former beauty queen know about pop styling, although she looks awesome, dresses great and speaks well. I won¡¯t say much about the other judge Zainal Alam Kadir, simply because I have no clue who is. Whatever the case, I think Paul Moss & Syafinaz themselves could have made the personality judgements on their own, and could have roped in the experienced OIAM image consultant Peter Lum to assist them in the styling dept (hey, wait a minute didn¡¯t he actually contribute to their styling?).
From the current reasonably talented bunch of 20 that were picked, there will be definitely a winner, but I cannot see the person to truly be representative of a One In A Million. Whoever it may be, I know for sure that Stevie Wonder will not be producing their album. Perhaps P.Diddy can apply.
Cheers and good luck to the Top 20. (This sounds so ridiculous since we already know who the top 10 are.)
