French Art & Film Festival 2014 @ GSC Mid Valley Megamall, GSC Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, GSC One Utama, Petaling Jaya (15/5 - 1/6/14) & GSC Gurney Plaza, Penang (5 - 15/6/14)
Kuala Lumpur, 29th April 2014 – The French Art and Film Festival (FAFF) is back for the 13th consecutive year from 15th May till 21st June 2014 in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. This yearly event is jointly organized by the Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur (AFKL) and the Embassy of France to Malaysia and presented by Martell, the French cognac house which has perfected the art of making the finest cognac in the world. Aiming to foster better community relationship and to share the French lifestyle and culture to Malaysia, this highly anticipated annual event will offer a selection of the best and the newest of French cinematic offerings. Other equally exciting line-up of the festival includes a hip-hop dance performance, a classical guitar recital, a photography exhibition, a French market, as well as a selection of exquisite gastronomic tasting events.
Kicking off the Festival would be the screenings of 12 French films at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) in the Klang Valley (Pavilion, Mid Valley and One Utama) from the 15th May till 1st June and in Penang (Gurney Plaza) from 5th till 15th June. In conjunction with this festival, a new logo and leader for GSC International Screens will be unveiled. This new logo and leader will reflect an updated yet fresh look for GSC International Screens, which has come a long way since it was first launched in 1999.
Movie lovers can anticipate a myriad of movie genres ranging from drama comedy Mood indigo (L’écume des jours) to drama thrillers The past (Le passé) to comedy romance Fly me to the moon (Un plan parfait) and to animations Princes and princesses (Princes et Princesses) to be screened. Many of the selected titles are award nominees or award winners of international film festivals from around the world. With these selections, the screenings would be a major attraction to audience from various age groups and with diverse interest. All the French movies screened are with English subtitles.
From the city which played a significant role in the history of cinema: Lyon, the Pockemon Crew will mesmerise you with an energetic French hip-hop performance. This World hip-hop dance champion group visits Malaysia for the first time to present their latest production “And… Action!” Taken back to film sets of the 1930s and 1940s this is an original piece that fuses hip-hop, cinema and music with spectacular results. The performance will be accompanied by a shared freestyle with prominent local hip-hop group, The Wakaka Crew.
Journey through one of the largest film festivals in the world that is known for its independent and artistic film selections, the Cannes Film Festival via a photo exhibition. Be up close with the stars and feel the excitement and glamour that reigns on the famous red carpet as you view the festival through the lens of a photographer. Take delight in the works of Clotilde Richalet; a photographer for the Cannes Film Festival since 2005. Taking a less conventional way of approaching the event, she chooses black and white images for the timeless feeling that the festival deserves and expresses a desire not to focus on close-ups but on wide angle shots to try and capture the atmosphere of the festival and the red carpet.
Take a step back and indulge in a classical guitar recital by one of the most brilliant guitarist of his generation; Gabriel Bianco, winner of the International Competition of the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA). Join in on a journey through the most original and significant pieces of classical guitar, an instrument rich with colours and varied tones. From baroque with Bach to Spanish tunes with Joaquin Turina, be enthralled by the music, tune & colour of this in the halls of Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur in Lorong Gurney.
A not-to-be-missed rendez-vous for epicureans during the festival are the champagne and cognac tasting sessions by Martell, a brand synonymous with exquisite fine French champagne & cognac. Audience and special invited guests can expect a complete sensorial tasting experience of French Champagne and French Cognac through tasting sessions held at The Pullman, Bangsar and Novotel City Centre, Kuala Lumpur. The tasting sessions will be conducted by a professional sommelier.
Foodies may rejoice and be seduced with an exquisite menu offered by 2 iconic French restaurants in town. Promoting the expression of diverse music style in a cheerful atmosphere, the closing highlight by Melissa Laveaux, a French Canadian singer of Haitian descent will take place in Alexis Bistro & Wine Bar, Jalan Ampang. A host of musical performances entertains and enlivens the atmosphere for festival fans at Jalan Mesui concurrently on 21st June. This event comprises the joint force of musicians from France and local music industry, which supports the mission of borderless music for all by keeping the youth and adults from all social backgrounds entertained with the latest and most popular music hits.
