Penang World Music Festival 2014 @ Penang Botanic Gardens, Penang (12 & 13/4/14)
When: 6.00pm, Saturday & Sunday, 12th & 13th April, 2014
Penang World Music Festival (PWMF) is back for its third installment this 12 & 13 April 2014 with 12 World-Music bands from across the globe; performing a variety of genres including folk, Balkan, Gypsy, Reggae, Tribal, Ethno Jazz and many more.
The two-day festival will be held at the famed 130-year old Penang Botanic Gardens, Penang, Malaysia.
Festival highlights include World Grammy Nominee, N’Faly Kouyate’ from West Africa and Belgium, also known as “Jimmy Hendrix of the Kora”, For fans of the Spanish Flamenco, look out for guitar virtuoso Davila Trio from France and Spain. Famed vocalist and actress from Poland , Ewa Konstancja will also be performing at the festival with her band Ewa Konstancja Bulhak & Ple Ple Band.
Other international bands that will be performing includes reggae group Carlos Dje Dje & The Protecters from South Africa, Alvorada Pé Vermei from Minas Gerais in Brazil; tribal drummers, Dollu Kunita and Kachi Ghodi Horse-Dance from India; traditional Malay flute and Rebana players, Mohram from Malaysia; Bulgara from Bulgaria; and traditional musicians OXUS from Uzbekistan. The festival will also highlight musicians and dancers from Penang.
PWMF 2014 on both days begins from 2.00pm with art and music workshops followed by the main concert from 6.00pm onwards. There will also be a festival bazaar on site offering a wide selection of food and beverages, souvenir items, handicrafts and the performers’ CDs especially for festival-goers.

World Grammy Nominee, N’Faly Kouyate’ & Dunyakan from West Africa/Belgium , is also known as “Jimmy Hendrix of the Kora”. The Kora is a West African bridge-harp. N’Faly was traditionally brought up as musician and a Griot – a cultural ambassador of West Africa. N’Faly has performed in many different festivals around the world and this will be his first performance in Malaysia.

Carlos DjeDje & The Protecters (South Africa)
Carlos DjeDje and the Protecters is a social-conscious reggae band from South Africa. Carlos Djedje’s music is largely influenced by the anti-apartheid and civil uprising movement in South Africa. The band’s music captures the struggles of humanity against racism, war and degeneration of the environment. Carlos DjeDje and the Protecters prides themselves as a messenger of peace, love and harmony through reggae music. For PMWF 2014, the band will be performing original compositions and some famous tunes from the late Bob Marley.

Dollu Kunita (India)
Dance to the energetic and vigorous drum beats of Tribal Drum group Dollu Kunita from India! Dollu is a popular drum dance from Karnataka, and it is usually accompanied by folk songs. The dance provides a variety and complexity of skills that was passed on from generation to generation. References to the art form is found in many ancient texts and scriptures. Typically performed in religiousceremonies of village festivals, the dance demands strength, muscle power and the spirit of endurance. Dollu Kunita will be performing with two sets of Kacchi Godhi “Horse-Dancers” from Rajastan. The Kacchi Ghodi of Rajasthan is performed by men on dummy horses, narrating the tales of the Bavarian bandits of Shekhawati region.
Bulgara (Bulgaria)
Bulgara is a world-fusion band from Bulgaria. Bulgara uses drum, bass, funk and intertwines with with Jungle, rock, jazz and folk instruments to create the harmonic beauty of Bulgarian folklore.
Founded in 2002, Bulgara have received many local and international acknowledgments, including the Askeer Theatre Award including original score for the theater performance The Divas, after Nikolay Haytov. The band’s music is also featured in the film “Beyond the Line”.

MOHRAM (Malaysia)
MOHRAM comprises of the talented duo, Muhardiman Ismail @ Mohar, flutist who plays the “Seruling” or Bamboo Flute and traditional percussionist Abdul Ramli Abdul Hamid @ Ramli Rebana who specializes in the Rebana (Membramophone) – the core instruments for Malay traditional music. Together with various other ethnic musical instruments from around Asia such as Erhu, Gambang, Gamelan, Koto, Udu and contem-porary musical instruments, MOHRAM creates a whole new realm of music for the soul. Masters in their own right on the Seruling and Rebana, a combination of these two talented performers have proved to be an explosive show of talents.

OXUS (Uzbekistan)
OXUS is a traditional and ethno music group from Uzbekistan. The name OXUS comes from the ancient names of Amu River in Central Asia. The group consists of four professional musicians with a long musical history and heritage in Uzbekistan.
The band performs various musical genres from the different regions of Uzbekistan: Bukharian Shashmaqom, Ferghana-Tashkent maqoms, Khorezm maqoms, and a number of national and folk instrumental music and songs. The indigenous arrangements of instrumental sounds are followed by the musicians’ artistic innovations. In 2007, the group produced an album called “Samarkand & Beyond”
Alvorada Pé Vermei (Minas Gerais, Brazil)
The group Alvorada Pé Vermei was founded in 2004 in Santa Luiza, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The group was put together to promote the local culture’s heritage and the traditional manifestations of Brazillian tribal rhythms such as caboclinhas, caipiras, candombes, moçambiques, capoeiras, and more.
Their latest project “Cawuco”, explores the musical transitions and arrangements of the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte that contains other influences such as choros, sambas, caipirismos and all elemensts of traditional music present in large cities
Ewa Bulhak & Ple Ple Band (Poland)
The repertoire of Ewa Konstancja Bulhak & Ple Ple Band consists of original tunes written by outstanding Polish poets and songwriters as well as Polish folk music. Music arrangements are inspired by ancient Slavic tradition and contemporary world music styles. The group consists of Ewa Konstancja Bulhak, – a significant actress and vocalist of the National Theatre in Warsaw; Maciej Kierzkowski – multi-instrumentalist, ethnomusicologist, composer and music producer, accordion player and singer Robert Lipka; and Adam Szuraj – drummer and percussionist.
Davila Trio (Spain/France)
Luis Davila Oria is Spanish guitar virtuoso, with a repertoire of original compositions inspired by the ancient tradition of flamenco music.
Born is Spain, Luis began started his musical performances as a soloist accompanied by Flamenco singers during his teenage years. He also managed the musical production of the television program “Musica Al Grano”
Luis continued his training at the Fundacion Cristina Heeren with flamenco masters such as Nino de Pura, Eduardo Rebollar and Pedro Sierra. In partnership with Raul Mico, Luis set up a show entitled “Callojon de Las Moradas” in tribute to the great flamenco singer “Camaron De la isla” which was performed in the Chapi Theatre de Villena in Alicante
