Martin Arul’s Weekly Review (Top 9)
And then there were 9..
Last week saw Aweera win the immunity, hence saving him from the eliminations. What about the rest? Did they vote to sustain the good ones in the competition? We definitely did find that out, as the show aired.
Throughout the week, at the end of the OIAM Diaries, we were treated to the contestants rankings as of that day, itself. Some may take it as their golden opportunity, however, I, for one, was not the least bit appealed at this strategy.
For starters, undoubtedly, it does bring in a lot of revenue to 8TV. Simply because, fans of a favourite, would vote for that particular contestant, should s/he be saved from the eliminations. On the other hand, some may see it as a very bad technique of saving, what I would describe as, a less deserving contestant. I, would go for the latter. Then again, this is purely based on how one looks at it. But then again, if a contestant deserves to be in the competition based purely on talent, I am sure that somehow, the votes would come in. This is still open for debate, so please leave your comments on this thread, I would love to hear your take on this.
However, back to that, I strongly feel that the ranking should be shown during the eliminations, as what matters the most, is the ranking at the end of the week. I strongly believe that they should show us the ranking of the contestants when the voting period has ended.
Back to the show..
This week saw Pija bid farewell to us all. Then, Pija Mentor, now Pija, is not a bad singer in any way. Though I’d like to think of it as, maybe some fans were not happy with her dismissing the Mentor to her name, hence not voting for her. She did, after all, win Mentor with a strong fan base, right? Whatever happened to them, now, I wonder. Under any circumstances, this girl is talented, and there would be deals for her out there. Pija, if you are reading this, all the best to you, and keep rocking.
There was a lot of pressure on Aweera, being the immunity winner and all, on whether he would be able to pull off another promising performance, and maintain the immunity again, this week. After an awesome rendition of Gemilang, that we have heard gazillion times, it was truly unique. The stakes were high. Would he be able to deliver? Not quite. Belting out Janjiku (Sofaz), aweera didn’t quite deliver as we, or I, had expected him to. Nevertheless, he is starting to mellow down on his ‘jeritan maut’, which I have been waiting for, for a very, very long time, It was an okay performance, but nothing to shout about.
With a signature hairstyle, and an attitude that slapped you in the face, Amy did an awesome job, to me. Delivering Yang Pernah, by Estranged, she did prove that she has the versatility of voice, that will be able to carry any type of song anyone were to throw at her to perform. Ultimately, what is important is that how versatile you can be at singing any particular number on demand. That is what makes you a singer. I did not quite agree with Syaf, when she put a question to Amy, questioning her genre of music. This is about finding your own voice. The style, the concept and the genre is left up to an individual to test and to grow up to it. As for Syaf, I think her genre is constantly stuck to Opera Sopranos, but that doesn’t mean that everyone else cannot show what they can do. This is, after all, a platform to test their skills and ability. If you agree, or disagree, please feel free to add a comment after this post okay.
With all due respect, if a songwriter says NO to a change in the song, it is a NO. Period. Fify belted out Kalis Rindu (Elyana). Her vocals were strong, and consistent, yet the whole set up was very cheeky and playful. It was a very fun performance, and a very sexy cat one too.. If I may, *rrooooaaarrrrrrrrrrrr* (haha!). Fify, to me, is starting to make statements in this competition and is starting to bloom. Good job to her.
The small boy with the big, big voice, (not forgetting the big, big, face too!), I think, is being overrated by everyone. For starters, he is an okay, average singer. Nothing great to shout about. I have always felt that Rizu is at the wrong place, at the wrong time. This is no America’s Next Top Model, or America’s Funniest Home Videos. This guy has to get his act together, and stop making funny faces and expressions. Feeling the song s one thing. OVER expressing a song, is another thing. Rizu falls into the latter. Upon watching the episode again, on CatchUp TV, if I actually close my eyes, and just listen to him sing, it doesn’t sound bad at all. Then again, this is TV, not radio. So we have to see him sing. It is bad. Period. But I have to give him credit for his rendition of Cinta by Flop Poppy. It was ok. He has an uncontrollable vibrato in his voice that makes u get a headache. Again, nothing to shout about *insert big stretched face here*
Just days before the show aired, I listened to the original version of Lalala Kerjalah, by Meet Uncle Hussain. My first impression of the song was “Wow. Big one mamma!”, hence wondering how on earth would Tomok be able to carry such a big song. I must say, however, he did a fantastic job in making it work for him. It was a mellow, and a more subdued version of the original, but man, it was amazing. He did a really great job. His vocals however, was a little shaky at the beginning, but he managed to pull it off. Two thumbs up.
Up next was Anith belting out Mungkin by Anuar Zain. It was an okay performance. Average. But I have to say this, she looks sad? Depressed? Disturbed? I don’t know. She does not look like her normal cheery self, and is starting to dsappear behind the scenes, just as she started. She has to come back to the shore, and not drown in the waters, or we’d be seeing her leave pretty soon.
Over the weeks, we have seen Nine progressing. Actually, just for the past 2 weeks. Belting out Flop Poppy’s Aku dan Kamu, it was not a bad performance. This is what he really is, and his performance has become more consistent and interesting. But, would it be enough to sustain him throughout? I cannot put my finger on Nine, I am indecisive, when it comes to whether this is the competition for him, or not. He seems to have quite a strong fan base, undoubtedly far lesser than the rest, by comparison. Only time will tell of his fate here in OIAM.
From a club singer, to Siti. That is a huge jump I would say. Belting out Dialah Di Hati made popular by Dato Siti, Esther blew me away. I had a jaw dropping moment when her performance was over. How many people can sing a Siti number, but still maintain their originality in a particular song? This was a Siti’s number, without it sounding like Siti. And I speak for the pronunciation, feel of the song and the deliverance of the number. It was amazing, and I am flabbergasted. Period.
Simon, Simon, Simon, what can I say? He has never let me down. Anyone for that matter. Simon is just a natural talent. With a husky voice to die for, he nailed his performance yet again. Syaf stated that his pronunciation is perfect, and I have to agree. For someone who’s mother tongue is not malay, he did a fantastic job in dictating and pronouncing the words. Fantastic energy and originality of the song helped heaps in his rendition.
After the final two performances, I very strongly believe in the phrase, save the best for last. I’m sure many of you would agree with me. Again, if you don’t, feel free to add on to this thread, and we can discuss it. I would be more than obliged.
So, now that I have covered the performance, there is something that has been bugging me, since Friday. This is specially dedicated to Syafinaz, if you happen to read this, I hope you learn something out of it. Seriously. Do us a favor and do something about it please, I beg unto thee!
Some of you may have realized that during Esther’s performance, she was being commented on harshly, not because of her bad performance, but because she was not GRANTED PERMISSION to change the song to suit her style. That’s right, you heard it right. My issue is :
1. Syafinaz darling, may I remind you, that, YOU ARE BORROWING A SONG FROM A SONGWRITER. IT IS NOT YOUR SONG TO CHANGE, AND DO WHATEVER YOU LIKE, WITH IT, SIMPLY BECAUSE IT IS NOT YOUR OWN. Explanation : Meaning, when a song writer says NO to change the song, u HAVE TO respect his decision, and do whatever he wants done. He is the OWNER of the song, and you are BORROWING his song for your contestants to sing. So, respect their decision, or just choose another song okay?
2. Syafnaz, AGAIN, DO NOT BRING THIS UP WHEN YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO COMMENT ON THEIR PERFORMANCE. Explained : Dear Syafnaz, you do not bring in the issues you have with the songwriter not allowing a change, when what you are meant to be doing up there is to COMMENT ON THE CONTESTANTS. Thank you. It is very disgraceful and humiliating not only for the songwriters themselves, but for OIAM as well. In the future, no songwriter would want to give you their songs, if you keep humiliating them. Understood?
If you don’t understand, PLEASE come and meet me, I’d do the honors of telling you “Eh, you, you know what humiliation you have caused to them? Do you even think before you speak?”
I seriously think that someone should give her another round of JOB DESCRIPTION briefing. She seems to have gotten it all upside down.
Now, that I have vented it all out, Congratulations to Indrawn (Tomok) on winning this weeks immunity (Yeay to you Tomok fans! You save credit!), and Malaysia, please do your part in sustaining the worthy contestants.
Till I see you again next week,
I-feel-very-laser-this-week-Mart
Adios!
