Jazzing it up with some bittersweet tunes from indie pop gem Froya.
The 9th edition of the highly rated Penang Island Jazz Festival got off to a spicy start at the Sundown Stage which was held at the Tropical Spice Garden, in Teluk Bahang, Penang, last night. The flavourful event which showcased both seasoned and emerging Malaysian musicians, saw a spirited turnout of both local and international music fans despite intermittent rain showers that blanketed the equatorial gardens surrounding the discrete venue, throughout the exciting three hour long festival teaser.
Opening the festival was unsigned singer songwriter Zalila Lee who warmed up the wet night with her eloquent musings. The reserved Zalila who much prefers to speak more through her songs, rather than in person, strummed, plucked and palm thumped her way with her life tales, into the hearts of all that had made the effort to catch the experimental prelude. Also taking centrestage was genre blending folk and electro rising star Michelle Lee a.k.a. Froya, who quickly got the attentive audience cheering her on, with her quirky, fresh and colorful tunes, and sweet vocals. Supporting her on stage was Melina Ghani on electric guitar and David Ling on keys. Keeping the energy flowing was animated guitar toting veteran Rafique Rashid who had everyone tickled with his life observations and comedic infusions. Joining him on stage, was Alex on harmonica. Capping off the vibrant night were upcoming acapella quartet Capifruta, who are made of four dynamic young talents - Tracy Wong (soprano), Lai Suk Yin (alto), Aaron Teoh (tenor) and Joel Wong (baritone) - who recently won two silver medals at an international choir competition.
Zalila's six track "Shadows" EP will be out soon.
"Rafique & Alex filling the room with more than music."
"Young talents Capifruta taking Malaysian made acapella to the forefront"
