Episode 1 - Main Auditions (OIAM 3)
Please note that we have deleted parts of the NRIC & phone numbers on the pic to maintain confidentiality.
Q. Why do you think you are worth a million?
A. Because I want to ...
(But we love the "Interesting/Unique story" part too ... read on the pic)
I have been looking forward to season 3 from the time season 2 ended. And I am so glad that it is finally back. In a few more hours, Malaysian viewers will once again get to enjoy 8TVs breakaway reality talent series One In A Million, the only reality singing TV show in probably the whole planet that offers a prize money of one million (currency exempted).
The idea was conceived by the formidable team at 8TV, 3 years ago to crop the outflow of money to international reality TV franchisers. Instead of spending millions on fees to license internationally branded shows (i.e. Idol series), 8TV decided to create their own brand and reward part of the money saved to the winner. They figured that with that kind of prize money, the eventually champ will actually be able to go out in the industry and do something really substantial with it. To ensure that the money actually gets spent on their carreer, the winner only gets a third of it for their personal use, while the rest is managed for them to develope their future in the industry. I guess that is more than fair enough but whether such an investment on one's carreer will actually derive substanstial returns has yet to be proven to date. I guess we will have to wait and see what becomes of our first two winners who walked away with the biggest prizes in Malaysian music history.
The great news is some of the finalists from both the earlier seasons seemed to have faired extremely well in the industry or at least are on their way to an amazing carreer in the industry despite not winning the ultimate prize.
Multi award winning Faizal Tahir has to be probably the most incredible success story for someone who actually came in second. With a host of awards to his name including 4 Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) "mics" last year, and 3 Anugerah Juara Lagu "music notes" this year, plus a critically & commercially succesful album that inspired those wins, it clearly shows that OIAM certainly opens doors even to those who did not steal the top prize. Many other finalists seemed to have done well for themselves as well, such as Farah Asyikin, who has a top notch album out as well (we gave it a 4-star rating) albeit a poorly distributed one, and has wrangled herself the ambassadorship for Roscani watches, among other things, Alif Satar who seems to be doing some incredible things in musical theatre, season 2 runner up Shila, who has a couple of music videos up and theme songs to her credit including the one for Alam Story, Iz Sulaini who has been making inroads into the industry on his very own with a lot of grit & perserverance and even celebrity finalist Dayang Nurfaezah who has been thrust back to the forefront in the Malaysian music scene.
OIAM is still a brand that is in development, but with a prize of RM 1 Million, its not easy to brush it aside, and it should eventually achieve its goals of being a sought after reality TV brand, that will be a major payback to its creators and investors, if it has not already done so as yet.
This year, I was lucky enough (and at the courtesy of 8TV) to be a close part of the show, which i truly appreciate and thank them wholeheartedly for. I had the pleasure and opportunity to experience everything the contestants and the crew experienced throughout the entire selection process & beyond, and had complete insights to the inner workings of such a complex production, so much so, that at the end of the Central Eliminations stages, producer cum director Zebedee De Costa remarked to me, "You can now start your own production company". I probably could too, after all that exposure, but I think I will stick to what I do best here in Rentak.
With so much gained from the experience, we at Rentak Sejuta will seek to impart some of that inner soul to our viewers here throughout this season, so that all of you guys out there will be able to appreciate and understand the show a lot more.
Looking at the level of commitment invested by the producers & crew this year, we believe that OIAM 3 will certainly exhibit more depth in its final production and increase its value proposition to its viewers, as the human elements get stronger representation on air and we are possitive that the show will bring the audience closer to the contestants as they struggle and perservere to make the cut every week for the next few months. Simply put its going to be an absolutely fabulous season three.
So whatever you do, just take every Friday night (especially between 9.30pm and 10.30pm) out of your sosial calendar until May 2009. Be prepared to glue yourself to the idiot box or make your way to the live shows starting February 20th. And make sure you drop by here daily to show your support, make comments, criticize or exalt, lobby your favourites, chill out with the contenders, judges, crew and the rest of the OIAM 3 fans, and whatever else you are feeling inclined to do. And we will make sure we bring you the best of OIAM 3 right here in Rentak Sejuta, as we always have.
