Rentak Sejuta's Top 12 Review
The entire review for the top 12 pretty much can be summed up by one simple line;
¡°I think the judges were judging the choreography and not the dancers.¡±
That innocent but accurate summation was not from me. It was actually from Bong, who is one of our administrators/contributors here in Rentak, and it came no sooner than the judges had announced their bottom six, I have to agree, and most of our fellow crew members are in consensus about it too. It was absolutely right on the money.
There clearly was a big disparity between the choreographies this week, as some contestants had to tackle more challenging routines and ended up looking more impressive while others had to settle for very simplistic ones, with rather obvious results. The ones who were tasked with the more complex combos made the leader board (even here in Rentak) while the rest were tossed into the bottom six. Now, I have always been a firm believer in making the best of whatever hand that is played out, but some of these contestants really had no chance, even when they took what little that was given to the max.
It is probably pointless to go into individual performance reviews, so I will just generalize this week. First point I would like to moot really is that, too many similar genres have been selected every week resulting in the lack of variety. There were simply way to many contemporary (although it was masqueraded under many disguises) & hip hop pieces in this competition. At least, last year we were treated to a wider repertoire of styles which made the show more interesting & exciting. I am yet to see a Paso Doble, a Tango, a Samba, a Rumba or even a pure lyrical piece. It has been the same few styles that keep popping up every week with some of them being repackaged under the fusion banner. One routine got so fused into something so hideous it ended up confusing the judges & the viewers, and ultimately ending the season prematurely for one pair. There must be something terribly wrong with the system as another pair had to endure the ignomity of having to tackle the same genre three weeks in a row. This week alone we had 3 contemporary routines & 2 hip hop routines, the lone differentiator being the foxtrot. Last week we had 3 contemporary (although one was tagged as fusion) & 3 hip hop (one was tagged as house) numbers with waltz being the only exception. It is getting rather stale and if this keeps up it will soon be expired. I hope the producers will mix it up a little more to ensure that we are treated to a more enticing showcase or the crowd at Ruums might thin out even more. Now that there are only 5 pairs, it would not be difficult to ensure that they get to perform something different from each other (i.e Lyrical, Salsa, Broadway, Hip Hop & Tango). Wouldn¡¯t that be something? Let¡¯s just cross our fingers.
The other thing I noticed for the last few weeks is some of the contestants seem to be missing the chemistry between each other, especially the ones who gelled so strongly at the beginning of this competition. Perhaps they are getting a little bored and need a change. 2 couples seem to be fizzling out, namely Ray & Cecelia & more apparently Zul & Jorida. Perhaps the partner reshuffle this week will refresh them as they find synergy with their new partners. Hopefully the change will not affect the late risers who have already or finally forged a tight & maturing partnership over the course of this competition. Most, surely will be wondering whether this spanner in the works will derail the formidable pair of Black & Farah who were without a doubt the most connected pair, who now have to reestablish new alliances with Sim & Ray respectively. Sly who linked up excellently with Sim late in the game, now has to reacquire that bond with Jojo. It will certainly be an interesting show next week when the new pairings take to the stage.
