Rentak's Top 18 (Episode 7) Review
Zul (Belalang) & Jorida (Jda) continued their consistent run in this competition when they performed their contemporary piece to Train¡¦s ¡§Drops of Jupiter¡¨ this week with a fluent & believable routine that further amplifies their position as one of the top contenders this season. To the uninitiated, the routine may look visually easy and uncomplicated but the fact remains it was difficult choreography made to look effortless by an extremely convincing duo. It is clear that both are physically & mentally strong, compliment each other well and make every effort to bring their very best to the stage every week, although Zul did look less sharper than he was last week. The impeccably focused Jorida clearly draws strength from her training in ballet and delivers her every motion with the precision of a surgeon. It was rock solid showcase by the pair.
It was certainly not quiet in the club when Raymond & Jojo took on Bjork¡¦s ¡§It¡¦s Oh So Quiet¡¨ for their Broadway showpiece. They seem to have a habit of getting the audience on their side whenever they perform as a pair. That¡¦s probably because their routines have been cheeky, a whole lot of fun and a pleasure to watch. But that¡¦s just it. It was all ¡§Paddle Pop¡¨-ish performances that easily melted away from our minds and left us with a milky after taste. All it really showcased was their theatrical & comedic skills but not their true dancebility. Both Jojo & Raymond are more than decent dancers that certainly can impress, but unfortunately it did not really translate on stage this week as their comical interludes overshadowed their technical expressions. Perhaps they overdid it a little this week with the comic relief, as the technical portions of their routines were not as focused, clean and as conclusive as their hip hop performance from the week before. And with timing not running like clockwork, it was no surprise that Jojo¡¦s bobbing head eventually jangled Raymond¡¦s jewels when he leapt over her. Ouch!!!
I am not quite sure what Afro Cuban Contemporary really is or whether Siti Nurhaliza¡¦s ¡§Ku Mahu¡¨ would actually fall in such a category, but whatever the case it was nice to see Sly & Zef being comfortable with each other to deliver a pleasant surprise on the dance floor. Their fused together choreography from Azwa & Fasilito, which seemed to have elements of samba, contemporary, tribal & even bits of capoeirra, was convincingly and eloquently executed. It was energetic, refreshing & flowing, and it was more than evident that both parties cherished their new partnership. Zefane looked completely invigorated from her miserable outing last week and was all smiles & positivity throughout their performance. The nifty Sly was equally as relaxed and was moving with so much fluidity this week as if all restraints had been removed. We hope this new found synergy will propel them forward in the weeks to come.
Napi & Sim¡¦s lyrical jazz piece performed to Pink¡¦s ¡§Nobody Knows¡¨ was sheer poetry in motion. It was performed exquisitely and in perfect synchronization. It was engaging and beautiful to watch. The elegance that was very much missing from Napi¡¦s Viennese Waltz last week, returned in abundance. His display was fluid & full of volume, as he merged flawlessly with the natural born dancer in Sim who was a picture of perfection. It was simply breathtaking to watch them both resonate so harmoniously and to be able to assemble every step so immaculately, as they brought the characters they were portraying to life.
The much anticipated nuclear explosion did not occur as neither Cecelia nor Raymond managed to press all the right buttons this time around. I guess it¡¦s not easy to return with a bang after exploding so grandly last week. Perhaps it was a case of one mambo too many that sealed their doom. In order to upstage last week¡¦s performance, the pair needed to extend their routine with a little more complexity in order to be even more explosive, which eventually resulted in a slight technical misadventure towards the end of their performance. What was expectedly a stirring start full of gusto & finesse by the ¡§beautiful duo¡¨ eventually got bogged down by the lack of continued focus midway through. As they prepared to execute the complications in their routine, everything became unraveled far too quickly. The timing was out and the lines were not clean anymore, as they succumbed to mediocre executions that were clumsy and loose, although the complexity of the moves themselves made it look impressive to the audiences. I particularly like the one where a bent over Cecelia¡¦s head slides down the back of Ray¡¦s leg in a step ladder fashion. Also impressive was the very technical finale, but unfortunately that too suffered from poor finishing. Nevertheless, both Ray & Cecelia still managed to excite the audiences but unfortunately not the judges.
It was a limp & lifeless performance by both Fairul & Zen who attempted a Malaysian Contemporary routine to Nora¡¦s ¡§Samudera¡¨. As hard as they tried they just could not muster the chemistry to work as a team, and were never in tune with each other throughout their lacklustre display. Trust issues further eroded their personal self confidence and it showed on the dance floor. All their moves were conveyed half heartedly as they grappled to find some form of connectivity on stage. Although Fairul managed to hold his own (but rather weakly), Zen was incoherent and drained, and was a shadow of her true self. In the end, their disjointed effort merely escalated their removal from the competition.
During rehearsals in the afternoon preceding the evening show, all the contestants have to walkthrough their motions so that they know all the camera positions. They don¡¦t actually have to dance full on then; merely go through the steps lightly, to familiarize themselves. That¡¦s exactly how Chee Wei & Samantha¡¦s hip hop routine seemed like ¡V just a walkthrough. Enough said.
Hong¡¦s perfectly animated closing when his ¡§bird of paradise¡¨ rises from the ground in flight could have easily found its way to an episode of Natural Geographic. Every limb, muscle & ligament flexed & arched exactly as it should. It was simply magnificent. Sarah, on the other hand may have not been as convincing, but managed to rise to the challenge reasonably well, this week. It was not as emotionally captivating as her performance last week, but she managed to execute her moves favorably even though she is still not technically mature, which explains her lack of confidence in exposing herself completely. Too much is held by her in reserve for the fear of failing, which luckily does not affect the positively charged Hong who danced freely and in full flight throughout but not nearly as spectacular as his concluding routine. If Sarah can overcome her passiveness, tighten up her routines and explore a little more of her creativity, she will certainly be a more engaging ¡§Puteri Sentubung¡¨ and a serious contender.
Black & Farah put the sizzle back into a downward spiraling night by sliding out of their Everlast boxing shorts of the week before and delivering a sucker punch of a knockout blow with an energetic, flava-some & spectacular performance that ¡§Shook Everyone¡¦s Poms Poms¡¨ including Missy Elliots. They captured everyone¡¦s imagination & hearts right from their very first penguin waddle (which would have made Mumbo even prouder if Farah had done it with her heels and not her toes) and didn¡¦t let it go until they faced the judges in character. On a night that did not sparkle like the week before, these two ¡§happy feet¡¨ could do no wrong, as they delivered the night¡¦s best performance, with an unadulterated, energetic & exciting showpiece. They exuded both charm & sophistication as they took control of the dance floor and pranced about ever so entertainingly. They certainly had the audience eating out of their hands with their fusion of salsa & hip hop. Farah was less economical this week in her moves as she came out blazing and full of fire, and turned temptress on stage. She made sure that everyone knew that she was not just there to make up the numbers, and was ready to take on all comers. It was clearly gloves off time, a sentiment equally expounded by her partner Black who also raised his stake in this competition and stole the show with a compelling, articulate and more than impressive display. In fact he was the bomb, and together with Farah, ended the evening on an explosive note.
It was rather surprising to see both Ray & Cecelia in the bottom six. Although their performance was less than perfect it did not warrant them to be thrown to the wolves just yet. Even the audiences in general were displeased with their selection and were vociferous about it. Perhaps the judges were judging them on a different scale from the others. In the end it did not matter as they both garnered enough votes to stay on in the competition, along with Sarah and Chee Wei who also escaped eliminations. Fairul & Zen were unfortunately not so lucky.
