13 Reasons For Dayang's Elimination
In the press conference after the top 3 episode, Dayang brought up the fact that she missed some of OIAM¡¦s episodes because she said she had to, because she had to juggle between her career and OIAM, as she had a lot of financial commitments which included paying bills & taking care of her parents, and said that others did not have similar responsibilities and could focus more on the competition. To which I asked ¡§What about Faizal? Doesn¡¦t he have responsibilities as well?¡¨ She replied that it was not the same as she had more responsibilities and he didn¡¦t have as much to worry about. I am not the sort that kicks someone once they are down but that really irked me.
I had a chance to discuss her elimination with her in a very cordial manner after the PC (along with Milo, Rayboy & Raymond), after I which I came to the conclusion that Dayang gravely underestimated the requirements of the competition, thus tried to toggle between both her career & OIAM, without focusing completely on this competition. I think she presumed that she was more than good enough to sail through this competition since she was already an established artiste whom had already paid enough dues thus did not give the competition the respect and the commitment it deserved. She simply made a serious error in judgment which was fatal to her in the end. She never realized that this was a whole new ball game, and what she is or was will not matter, as everyone starts here with a clean slate. For someone who claimed that she wanted to win it so badly she just did not set her priorities right.
I mulled over the facts that transpired over the last few weeks and came to the conclusion that following were the contributing factors that led to the elimination of Dayang.
1.Dayang depended too much on her existing fan base which is only a fraction of the urban viewers of OIAM, and did not create new fans to her brand.
2.By not turning up for many of OIAM promotional events she did not have an opportunity to expand on her loyal fan base, or convince fence sitters to jump on board her bandwagon, which the other contestants did. Some existing fans were also put off by all the no shows, which they made an effort to turn up at too, and may have decided to abstain from from voting.
3.All the hoo haa created in the forums regarding her specialty treatment, may also have swayed some fence sitters who wanted a fair and equal representation from all.
4.Some misguided Dayang fans who went unnecessarily to war with Suki fans in the forums by posting race related topics also created animosity among forumers, whom may have chosen to aggressively vote Dayang out. Similarly Dayang fans who may have tried to do the same to Suki by voting her out, could have voted less for Dayang, because they overstretching their budgets.
5.Performances wise Dayang did not deliver anything more than what was expected of her, as Paul Moss accurately commented.
6.Turning up sexier & performing more seductively every week may also have turned off more conservatively minded viewers.
7.Constantly mimicking Beyonce & Destiny¡¦s Child did not help either. And constant references by the judges that only Dayang can do R&B based numbers may not have gone down well with fans of other existing artistes who can and have already done so.
8.After every live episode at SP2, all of the other contestants spent time building loyalty & friendship among their fans and those who were around; by mingling with them and making the fans feel close to them.
9.Paul Moss¡¦ reply at RS, that ¡§she took a mile when she was given an inch¡¨ regarding regulation flaunting also may have had its effect.
10.Having to explain herself for her non appearances on Diaries, as instructed by 8TV may have had its effect too.
11.Her final diary episode may have also may have left a lot of people pretty cheesed off, especially when every other contestant predicted someone other than themselves to win, yet, Dayang chose to confidently predict her own victory, as she claimed that she deserved it due to the fact she made the most effort to get there.
12.A Dayang fan coming live on 8TV Quickie the night before the finals and saying that he was voting Suki out because she had the support of the Chinese, may have caused even more damage.
13.The most compelling reason apart from all the above snowballing reason¡¦s above is the fact that the viewers simply want someone fresh like Suki, Faizal, or Alif to win, who were clearly seen as giving it their all to this competition.
