I was at Zouk last night with the rest of the gang as I was promised in an advert in the newspapers that the OIAM finalists will be performing at TM's music portal launch there. Wow, great!!! Well that's what we thought.
We soon found out that Suki & Alif will not be allowed to perform there due to both of them being underaged and will breach Zouk's age rules. That's ok and was understandable. Well, we still had Faizal, Farah, Azfar & .... Dayang. Dayang? Er, Dayang ... did she come in an invisible outfit, cause, I and the rest certainly didn't see her. Oh, that's right, she was not available that night as she was performing live for Zoom In With Dayang on RTM. Hmmm.
Come to think of it, I haven't seen Dayang appear at so many of OIAM promotional activities where she was to perform or appear for the fans. She certainly wasn't there in Bukit Jalil, and neither was she there at Berjaya Times Square. According to other sources, she didn't even make some of the road shows. Ai!!! What's going on? Well it seems that Dayang is busy doing her own gigs whch seems to be clashing with OIAM's promotional activities. Huh? Boleh ke?
Now, why is Dayang allowed to do this? Isn't she supposed to be bound by OIAM throughout this competition and even after for a certain period of time. According to some, these external non OIAM commitments were already arranged before OIAM and therefore she was given some exceptions to complete these gigs. Please lah. What kind of nonsense is this?
I though there were rules about this in the contract she signed when she joined this competition: "The contestant hereby warrants & represents that he/she is not bound by any contract and is free to enter and make commitment under this contest." I thought everyone was bound by these rules. How come Dayang gets the exception?
Is this fair to all the other contestants? Dayang is allowed to go and earn as much as she can from her personal assignments, where else, the others will have to be contended with nothing but the limited allowances provided by 8TV during this competition. Furthermore, Dayang gets more opportunities to lobby for her cause to win OIAM at all these engagements, plus extended media coverage that accompanies them. Imagine being on Zoom In where she can easily promote herself & lobby for OIAM votes from the audience during every commercial break during the live shooting; "Sayang Dayang tak?. Jangan lupa undi Dayang, ya!!!" Plus the additional nationwide exposure thru RTM. Come on lah. This is not a level playing field for the other contestants who have been working just as hard to win this competition. Shall we now say UNFAIR competion. The others have foregone all their personal work commitments and any other opportunities that they would have had if they didn't join this competition. They sacrifice their life, time & income to toe the line but how come Dayang is allowed so much leeway. Certainly seems unfair to me. If she had so many commitments already set up prior to OIAM, she should not have joined then. If having an opportunity to win a million RM was important, than all the other commitments have to be set aside. The others did.
It's also unfair to the sponsors who expect no less than maximum mileage for their RM. I am sure TM & BHP must be fuming that Dayang has not turned up for some of their important promotional events. If I was the CEO of both these companies, I would have been rightly flabbergasted. I can only imagine how angry TM would have been yesterday at their music portal launch, when they only had 3 OIAM finalist performing there, and the biggest name of them all was missing.
But most importantly, it is absolutely unfair to the thousand of FANS who turn up at all the OIAM promotional events. Especially Dayang fans, who have to go home dissapointed. Some may even feel that they are being cheated.
This double standards doesn't augur well for the show, especially in its inaugural season. The producers must maintain a sense of fairness in this competiton, otherwise they will not earn any respect from their viewers as their credibility will be shot.
In the Press Conference after last Friday's show, one reporter quetioned Dayang on why she was not at some of OIAM's promotional activities. She answered that her schedules had already been set prior to her joining the show. She also added that, however, she does turn up for Friday competiton. She further said that she had to balance between OIAM and her schedules. Helloooo...!!! Are you kidding me? Surprisingly her schedules so far has not clashed with her Friday nights or she would have to give one of the OIAM competition nights a miss. Hmmm. Is there anything in this girl's head to even give such a stupid and incredulous answer. I bet this will be the butt of all jokes in the Press Club for week's to come. I bet everyone reading this is already rolling on the floor laughing.
Well, not to worry. I suppose, she will still get votes even if she doesn't turn up for the rest of the competiton.
Maybe, next year we can make some changes to the show and allow the contestants not even to turn up for the competition as long as they can manage to get enough votes to stay in it. Save a heap of money in pre and post productions, and just have results show every week. The contestants can do their own promos on their own time, and sing whatever, whenever & whereever they please. They don't even have to sing if they don't want to, as long as they get the votes to stay on. Now that would be a great concept for a show (I better copyright that now before someone steals the idea).
Honestly, can someone tell me what kind of nonsense is this? Now, I feel really sorry for those who have been kicked out. They did everything according to the rules and made every effort to do their absolute best for the show but have been given the boot. Which is sad when some contestants apparently can do anything they please at their own fancy, and still be the in the contest. I feel even sorrier for the ones who are still there and have to put up with these double standards. I guess that goes with the territory, after all Dayang is a big name and has star value for the show, so might as well close one eye (where we heard that before), right???
Please note that this is not a personal attack on Dayang or on 8TV but to merely to point out the unfairness facing the contestants who have been toeing the line. And the unfairness to the sponsors and the fans. It is also to find out what others feel about this torrid situation and what remedies need to be taken so such things do not occur. I concur that it is all a learning process for all concerned and hope that this article and many others like this will guide the producers, on what is acceptable or not, from the point of their viewers.
