The show is giving RM1mil in cash and prizes to the champion, making it one of the most prestigious reality talent search shows around.
Syafinaz seems excited to judge the upcoming reality TV show that is open to amateurs and recording artistes. The RM1mil prize consists of cash and a recording contract, that includes production with top-name producers, collaboration with top-name artistes and a marketing campaign.
“I was approached by 8TV to judge the competition. At the same time, I was also offered to judge two other reality TV shows. I had a tough time weighing which suited me best.
“In the end, I settled for One in a Million because of its unique content,” said Syafinaz in an interview at Menara Star in Petaling Jaya recently.
Syafinaz will be judging the show alongside Paul Moss.
Over 4,000 hopefuls turned up for the auditions, which were held in Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur last month.
Among the better known names at the audition were Dayang Nurfaizah, Billy, Nine, Jim, Alya, Alif, Shahira, Nur Fatimah, Faizull and Farah.
“We received very good response with the participation of recording artistes as well. Most who came for the auditions were talented, which made it difficult for Paul and I to narrow them down.”
Syafinaz, a trained vocalist and music lecturer at UiTM and Akademi Seni Kebangsaan, is on the lookout for participants who are unique and talented.
“I am looking for participants who will be able to make a difference in the music industry. Each finalist should have strong vocals and his own style. It helps if he can handle a wide range of music.
“It’s going to be a tough fight as the participants range from experienced singers to 16-year-olds who have never sung in front of an audience. Don’t be surprised if the inexperienced ones work harder and give a tough fight to the professionals,” she said with a smile.
If life is a roller-coaster ride, Syafinaz is at the peak now. Despite having to juggle her roles as a recording artiste, performer, music lecturer, advisor/ vocal master of the national choir and judge of One in a Million, she is still having a great time.
“Although I’ve been extremely busy with my commitments, I am enjoying myself. My biggest achievement is being able to lecture and perform at the same time,” said the tall and slender 33-year-old who hails from Batu Pahat, Johor.
Syafinaz has been in the entertainment scene since she was nine. When her late father realised her potential for singing, he encouraged her to take part in RTM’s children programmes. That was in the early 1980s.
With the help of her eldest sister Angrahi, who was attached to Angkasapuri, Syafinaz started appearing in children programmes such as Senandung Kanak-Kanak, Rasa Sayang and numerous festive shows.
“Every weekend, my father would tirelessly drive me to Kuala Lumpur for recordings. I thank my parents for encouraging me to venture into this line.
“My family members love singing and are into the arts. I have grown up in a family of singers. My mother sings beautifully and everyone sings so it was quite natural that I got into singing,” said the bubbly lady, who is the youngest of 11 siblings.
Syafinaz, who holds a music degree from UiTM, is a lyrical soprano. Her repertoire comprises operatic arias by composers such as Mozart, Puccini, Bellini, Delibes and Verdi.
She has also performed in numerous classical concerts conducted by the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia
In 1999, she was the first-runner up in RTM’s Penghibur HMI ’99. The same year, she clinched the gold medal at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles.
“It was one of my proudest moments. I was the only Asian who participated in the category and never thought that my song, Sang Mengukir Mimpi, would win the hearts of the judges,” said Syafinaz, who has released two albums, Ingin Bersamamu and Syyh... Syafinaz.
When she is not conducting lessons and performing, Syafinaz prefers to spend time with her family, reading novels and music books, and shopping. She likes to unwind by listening to classical performers like Maria Callas, Dame Joan Sutherland and pop singers like Anita Baker and Patti LaBelle.
She enjoys listening to classical pieces by renowned composers like Mozart, Beethoven and Bellini.
# One in a Million premieres today at 9.30pm on 8TV.
