Local all-girl pop group Dolla made global headlines by becoming the latest Malaysian act to grace Spotify’s advertisement on New York City's famed Times Square Billboard. Their appearance on the digital billboard came about as a representative for Malaysian female singers for the world-renowned digital music streaming platform's EQUAL Global Music Program.
EQUAL which was launched in March 2021 in conjunction with International Women's Day is a global programme created by Spotify to foster and nurture equity for women in music by highlighting female artists across the world. According to a study funded by Spotify on the representation of women in the music industry, only one in five artists on the charts are women. Spotify launched EQUAL to upend this disparity by amplifying the work of women creators by extending their resources and generating more opportunities for these artists, by creating a global, cohesive, branded experience with the program.
There are currently 35 local EQUAL playlists covering artists from over 50 countries, with Dolla being on the cover as a representative from EQUAL Malaysia and Singapore’s playlists. There is also the "best" EQUAL Global Playlist that contains music of EQUAL artists from around the world. Among the other artists currently featured on EQUAL include Yuna, Bowkylion, Griff, Zoe Weiss, G.E.M., Sunidhi Chauhan, Bich Phuong and Chai. Dolla is definitely standing among great company.
Dolla also made history last year by being the first all-girl music group to be featured as a Malaysian street art piece that adorned the entire sidewall of a hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The eye-catching artwork was commissioned by Samsung Malaysia as part of their promotional campaign.
Dolla which consists of four talented young ladies namely Sabronzo, Tabby, Syasya and Angel, is the third Malaysian act to grace the Times Square billboard after Yuna, and most recently, rising young star Layla Sania.
“Words just cannot express how we feel right now. This is such a huge honour for a newly formed vocal group like us and we hope we can continue to live up to the expectations of our fans,” shared Sabronzo speaking on behalf of her group who were delighted upon learning the news.
The group which debuted in 2019 started a ripple in the local music industry with their daring image and bold showmanship. Armed with slick dance moves and sensational fashion sense, the group continued to garner more followers with their contemporary brand of music. After hitting the local charts with their debut single ‘Dolla Makes You Wanna’ the group continued to set themselves apart from other local music groups. They released their second single, ‘Impikan’, and its English version, ‘Watch Me Glow’, in October 2020. ‘Impikan’ had a million views on YouTube in less than two weeks and gained widespread media attention locally and internationally as well within the Southeast Asian region and Korea. The pumping dance-oriented ‘Impikan’ has now surpassed the 5M views mark on YouTube while "Watch Me Glow" has reached 1.2 million. Their debut "Dola Makes You Wanna", is currently at 4.3 million.
Dolla also took part last year in The Philippines ABS-CBN initiated collaboration track, "HEAL", which was performed by an all-female Southeast Asia collaborative group made up of 13 artists across the region.
In early 2021, DOLLA released ‘Raya Raya Raya’, a festive song in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations. The track currently has over 4.3 million views on YouTube.
Dolla will officially be releasing its latest single "Berani" today and the song will make its premiere on YouTube at 9.00 pm tomorrow, 24th September 2021.
The group is currently signed to Universal Music Malaysia, an extension of Universal Music Group which is home to the most iconic and influential artists, labels and brands in the industry.
