Lockdown Listen Day 36 (18/08/2021)
Day 36 of Lockdown Listen on Tuesday 17th August 2021, saw us continuing with our vinyl adventure:
70. Alison Moyet - Alf (CBS)
Before there was Adele, there was Alison Moyet.
Geneviève Alison-Jane Moyet, an English singer-songwriter and performer noted for her powerful bluesy contralto voice came to prominence as one half of the synthpop duo Yazoo, with former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke. She parted ways with Clarke for a solo career, right after the release of their second album, while Clarke went off to form the shortlived synthpop duo The Assembly with Eric Radcliff, followed by the more established electropop duo Erasure with singer Andy Bell.
"Alf", her debut solo album released in 1984, reached No. 1 in the UK and spawned the international hit singles "Love Resurrection", "All Cried Out" and "Invisible". These three classic scorchers will live on forever and are essential heart songs in anyone's love collection.
The album itself was a successful collaborative effort with producers Tony Swain & Steve Jolley, who had also produced eighties superstars Spandau Ballet and Bananarama.
Moyet has since sold 23 million records from her 9 studio and 3 compilation albums. 2 of her albums have charted at #1 in the UK. She has won two Brit Awards for Best British Female Solo Artiste (1985 & 1988) among many others.
Moyet is an essential add to any music lover's collection. CDs are fine but vinyls would be better and more expressive overall, as well as more valuable.
