Lockdown Listen Day 35 (17/08/2021)
Day 35 of Lockdown Listen yesterday, saw us returning back to the warmth and authenticity of vinyl:
66. Haircut 100 - Pelican West (Arista)
67. Bob Marley - Legend (Best of Bob Marley & The Wailers) (Island)
68. Soul II Soul - Keep On Movin' (Club Classics Volume 1) (Virgin)
69. Sybil (Next Plateau)
"Pelican West" from the ultimate British new wave band Haircut 100 is one of the greatest records one can ever own. Their debut 1992 release charted at #2 in the UK and the only one of two albums by the group to feature founder and frontman Nik Heyward who left to pursue a reasonably successful solo career. Their funky signature sound featuring the stimulating and engaging blend of colourful horns and rousing percussions (congos), mixed with boisterous Brit pop, and their stylish clean cut image caught the attention of all music fans of the time, even beyond their shores, making "Pelican West" essential listening under the new wave genre. Their music still feels fresh, 39 years on. We bet most of their vinyls are well kept by collectors in Japan.
You can never go wrong with "Legend", the best ever collection of reggae's most iconic tracks. Released in 1984, the 14-track compilation album contains all the essentials including "No Women No Cry", "Is This Love", "Could You Be Loved", "I Shot The Sheriff", "Get Up Stand Up", "One Love", pretty much all of Marley's Top 40 hits plus more. "Legend" is the best selling reggae album of all time with more than 25 million copies sold worldwide. As of 14th August 2021 the album has spent 690 nonconsecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and 990 weeks in the Top 100 of the UK Albums Chart. If you are just getting into reggae, this is where you start. For bona fide reggae fans this is indispensable.
Soul II Soul's 1989 debut "Club Classics Volume 1" is one of the greatests explorations of rhythm & groove. It charted at #1 in the UK and spawned two club classics "Keep On Movin" and "Back To Life", the latter which went to #1 on the UK charts and became the 5th best selling single of the year. Both tracks were #1 on Billboards R&B charts with the album taking the top spot. But every track on this album is in a class of its own. Soul II Soul is a double Grammy winning collective formed by British DJ & music producer Jazzie B (Trevor Beresford Romeo), who were well known for crafting themed club classics that combined British, Caribbean, African, and African American influences. Their pioneering ideas have transcended generations of music makers.
Sybil's self titled sophomore effort is simply too sexy to mention. Anchored by two of the American R&B singer's greatest worldwide hits - covers of Dionne Warwick's "Don't Make Me Over" and "Walk On By" - the album become a favourite among club goers in the late eighties & early nineties. The album also features the hits "Crazy for You" (featuring Salt-N-Pepa) and a cover of Michael Jackson's "I Wanna Be Where You Are".
If you need a reason to move to vinyl, these four albums are among them. Collect and enjoy. Stop listening to disposable music. There's nothing like taking a needle to a record from your own personal collection, which you took years to accumulate, and will always appreciate.
