Lockdown Listen Day 33 (15/08/2021)
Day 33 of Lockdown Listen yesterday, made us switch to vinyl to enjoy these ultimate 80s classics in their true and authentic form:
62. Madonna - True Blue (Sire/Warner)
63. Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual (CBS/Sony)
64. Lionel Ritchie - Can't Slow Down (Kragen/RCA)
These are some of the key albums, everyone who grew up in the eighties should own. Every song in these albums are timeless.
"True Blue" is Madonna's third studio album. It was co-written by Madonna and produced with Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard, and is one of the best selling albums of all times with 25 million copies sold worldwide. It was #1 in a record breaking 28 countries and was the best selling album by a female artiste in the eighties. The five singles released from the album - "Live to Tell", "Papa Don't Preach", "True Blue", "Open Your Heart", and "La Isla Bonita" - all reached number one on either the US Billboard Hot 100 or the UK Singles charts. The album which was inspired by and dedicated to her then husband Sean Penn, also enjoyed critical success as well.
Interestingly Madonna's "La Isla Bonita" was written for Michael Jackson's "Bad", who turned it, down while her "Open Your Heart' was originally intended for Cyndi Lauper.
Cyndi Lauper's debut album" She So Unusual" which was released in 1983, three years prior to Madonna's smash hit "True Blue", is her best selling album to date with 16 million copies sold worldwide. It spawned the hits "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" (#2), "Time After Time" (#1), "She Bop" (#3) and "All Through The Night" (#4), making her the first female artiste to have 4 top five singles from the same album on Billboard's Top 100 chart. The album earned Lauper two Grammies including New Artist of The Year at the 27th Grammy Awards.
"Can't Slow Down" released in 1983, is Lionel Ritchie's best selling album of all time, selling over 20 million copies to date worldwide. 5 singles were released from his sophomore effort, all of them reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with "All Night Long" and "Hello" hitting #1.
The Billboard #1 album, also won Album of the Year at the Grammies in 1985, sidelining heavy weights "Born In The USA" by Bruce Springsteen and "Purple Rain" by Prince.
These albums continue to give us great pleasure, joy, meaning and excitement over the years, and are a significant part of our memories and lives. Only those who grew up with the songs from these albums may truly understand but others are encouraged to experience and discover.
We listened to these vinyls through an Audio-Technica LP60-USB vinyl player and a Marshall Stanmore integrated amp-speaker, for a well simulated eighties experience.
Do not listen to these outstanding eighties classics through streaming services or downloads. They must be physically owned and cherished, either on vinyl or at least on CD. You are shortchanging yourself on the whole experience otherwise.
