Lockdown Listen Day 27 (09/08/2021)
Day 27 of Lockdown Listen last Sunday gave us a diverse pick of R&B and Leftfield/Trip Hop/Down Tempo:
52. Usher - My Way (Arista/BMG)
53. Massive Attack - Mezzanie (Circa/Virgin)
Although "My Way" by Usher may have been a commercial success, we couldn't find anything really to shout about this album. Apart from a very few commendable tracks, the rest were just background fillers. No wonder it has hardly received any play time in our CD player. It may have received a Grammy nomination and is considered as his breakthrough album, we are still wondering why. Don't get us wrong. Usher is an excellent artiste, but this album just doesn't do it for us, even after multiple listens.
Massive Attack's "Mezzanine" on the contrary is at a different level completely. And every time we listen to it, we are drawn deeper and deeper into its dark and moody undercurrents. It is cleverly crafted for people who enjoy exploring soundscapes but despise monotonity. Its underlying abstractions are its overpowering attractions. It is mind stimulant without the substance abuse.
Released in 1998, Massive Attack's third studio album "Mezzanie" was #1 in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand and is also its most commercially successful album to date. It has been rated highly by most off the relevant music press including 5 star ratings from Uncut, AllMusic & The Gurdian, and is listed in both NME's and Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
Find it on all streaming services.
