Similarly, during Wei's solo piano performance, you will be hearing fresh takes on old jazz standards.
About Piano 1 to 3
Playing an important role in almost every jazz band, the piano takes the spotlight every Saturday at the Concourse with pianists performing solo and with their trios.
About Tan Weixiang
Tan Weixiang (also known as Wei) is a jazz pianist who is a first-call musician in his country of origin, Singapore. A latecomer into jazz, he started piano studies at 15 and jazz at 21 when he was in law school.
A protege of Thelonious Monk alumni Victor Gaskin, Wei’s musical career has skyrocketed since his first gig at a hotel lounge. In the span of 12 years, he has performed with numerous international mainstream jazz icons, Grammy Award-winners and world music giants, while also touring extensively around the world. Residing in New York City from the fall of 2007 to 2010, Wei quickly established himself as a musician of note, performing at hallowed jazz venues like Blue Note and 55 Bar with Grammy Award-winners Brian Lynch and Joe Lovano.
Wei has taught as an adjunct professor in New York University and is currently teaching part-time at LASALLE College of the Arts. He is also Deputy Head at Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company, while also serving as the Associate Music Director at Jazz Association (Singapore).
About Benjamin Poh
An articulate, solid and melodic bass player, Benjamin Poh is a seasoned performer and sessionist in the Singapore music circuit. Performing on a variety of international platforms, his versatility and ability to play across genres has seen him taking up session jobs at performing venues and events with various sought-after musicians. Poh’s recent performances include MGM Gastronomusic Festival in Macau backing Joanna Dong, Sing-Lang Concert, JEN (Jazz Education Network) Conference and EFG London Jazz Festival with the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO). He was in charge of bass duties at Joanna Dong's sold-out two-day concert held at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Besides playing at the Victoria Theatre as part of the rhythm section in the Lion City Youth Jazz Festival playing alongside Dr. Benny Golson, he was also part of the Jeremy Monteiro Trio featuring special guest, Grammy Award-winning artist, Ernie Watts.
About Soh Wen Ming
Soh Wen Ming has been a permanent fixture in the Singapore music scene, applying his unique style of drumming to music across multiple genres with some of the biggest names in the region like Charlie Lim, Chok Kerong, Jeremy Monteiro, Stefanie Sun, Corrinne May, F.I.R and Vanessa Fernandez. He has also performed with international artistes Yotam Silberstein, Eugene Pao, Alex Sipiagin and Theo Croker in international festivals around the region.
Equally recognised as an educator, he has held long term positions as an instructor at Esplanade’s Mosaic Jazz Fellows, LASALLE College of the Arts and Singapore Polytechnic Jazz Band.
