About The Artists
While 2020 won’t be fondly remembered by most people, there’s a good chance that musicians all over the world will do their best to pretend it never existed. The raging pandemic led to a virtually complete stop to performances, tours and travels. Of course, Tunisian drummer Malek Lakhoua, Italian saxophonist Andreas Marinello and Indian pianist Sharik Hasan—who were all looking forward to being part of the Singapore jazz scene—didn’t know that when they decided to move to Singapore mere months before the outbreak. Naturally, a brief period of introspection and pondering life in its many facets ensued.
Fortuitously meeting each other in late summer at first felt somewhat like a mirage. Playing together, however, made it clear to them that they had actually found water in the desert, a congenial musical partnership between three young people from as many continents, far away from home, united by love and common understanding of music. With the addition of Christy Smith, who has spent nearly three decades in Singapore, the Exile Quartet can’t wait to share their unique blend of jazz, Mediterranean folklore, original compositions and free improvisation with audiences.
