Historically, female jazz musicians were less well-known compared to their male counterparts, especially instrumentalists. Today, the W in Jazz Band aims to raise awareness about women who have contributed greatly to the jazz fabric with their unique style, arrangements and compositions.
Presented in this performance is the liveliness and humour of Mary Lou Williams, the introspective moods of guitarist Emily Remler and the vigorous intensity of drummer Cindy Blackman through their musical oeuvre. From the titular earworm In the Land of Oo-Bla-Dee, to the bouncy bebop of Pocket Wes, all the way to the post-bop rush of Traffic, the music of these jazz giants is not to be missed.
About The Band
The W in Jazz band is a collective of friends and musicians who came together from their love of jazz music. It was initiated by Elaine Wijaya and Lee Ann Gie, who felt the need to keep the stories of women in jazz alive by playing their music.
Lee Ann Gie fell in love with jazz after she was introduced to the music during her junior college years. She was selected to be a part of Esplanade’s Mosaic Jazz Fellows 2017 where she studied under Chok Kerong, Andrew Lim, Joshua Wan and Dr. Tony Makarome. She is currently a musician in the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company.
Elaine Wijaya is an aspiring drummer who loves listening to jazz and music from the African-American tradition. She was part of Esplanade’s Mosaic Jazz Fellows 2018, and is grateful to her mentors Chok Kerong, Andrew Lim, Aaron James Lee and James Gunawan. Milk tea and a good groove make her day.
