The art of vocalese is the practice of writing lyrics into instrumental solos, replicating solos with the human voice. Arising out of bebop vocals, the practice was first initiated by the great Eddie Jefferson in the 1950s. Join Yvette Atienza and her fabulous trio of musicians exhibit this challenging art form, with tunes like Four and Joyspring, complete with vocalese lyrics by the great poet laureate of jazz, Jon Hendricks.
About Yvette Atienza
A Singapore jazz pioneer from way back in the 1980s, Yvette Atienza has been singing jazz for over 30 years and has led the way in Singapore with her fierce devotion to the jazz idiom, most especially in the field of swing jazz, Latin jazz, jazz vocal improvisation and vocalese. With an ability to sing in seven languages—mainly due to her ability to speak Spanish—she started classical piano lessons with her classical concert pianist mother and piano teacher from the age of three. Atienza has also sang in R&B and pop bands, while performing roles in musical theatre productions. Jazz, however, remains her first and biggest love.
