Aya Sekine leads her Now Trio, which features Singapore's jazz luminaries Christy Smith (bass) and Aaron James Lee (drums) in two sets. The jazz pianist will also perform a solo piano set. In the past year, the well-seasoned artist has been self-reflecting on her deep-rooted artistry, seeking out her true voice in extremely diverse styles that are at once deeply soulful and fiercely eclectic.
The trio sets will feature compositions by great jazz pianists such as Thelonious Monk, Chick Corea and Bud Powell. For her solo set, she will present material that she finds personally challenging, which includes the works of Ludwig Van Beethoven, Japanese composer Rentarō Taki and some of her own arrangements of well-known standards.
About Piano 1 to 3
Playing an important role in almost every jazz band, the piano takes the spotlight every Saturday at the Concourse with pianists performing solo and with their trios.
About the artist
Boasting a cross-continental career in music that spans over three decades and multifarious roles, Japanese jazz pianist, composer, bandleader Aya Sekine commands a reputation for being one of Asia’s most illustrious jazz pianist-composers. Known for her distinctive style of jazz—a mixture of bebop, straight-ahead and free jazz that is at once hard-swinging, dynamic and relentlessly diverse—she has firmly established herself as a fervent advocate of the art form within the region.
While strongly influenced by bebop, straight-ahead and modern jazz traditions, Sekine’s constant forays into the experimental side of things have seen her bursting out of traditional structures, aligning her with free jazz and free-style improvisations and fostering countless multi-disciplinary collaborations with artists of diverse backgrounds to create new chemistry in music. Her infatuations for punk rock, hiphop, funk-soul, Brazilian music and the underground scene of Japan and NYC in the 1990s have led to the formulation of her truly innovative style.
