Ramayan "Di Persiaran Cakrawala" (Released 26/02/2021)
‘Ramayan Takes On An Epic Fantasy-Themed Album’
Malaysian Neo-Psychedelic Rock band, Ramayan, takes on an epic fantasy- themed album, donning the name ‘Di Persiaran Cakrawala’ (trans. On Cosmic Road).
After 4 years of intense concoction, Ramayan returns with a full-length album that goes by the name of ‘Di Persiaran Cakrawala’ (On Cosmic Road). This album packs on 10 songs, with each one different to the next, constantly taking its listeners through different atmospheres and emotional experiences, an attempt on branching off from its predecessor; their self-titled EP. Their first single off of this album, ‘Lamunan Anak Bulan’ (Daydreams of the Moonchild) has had received positive reviews nationwide, consequently winning TAPAU Awards’ Best Song of the Year 2020on December. This album also features renowned Indonesian artist and musician Mondo Gascaro as co-producer, who stayed with the band in Malaysia and recorded the album within a month’s period.
Recording the album at Ronggeng Studio, Luncai Emas, the band utilised the track-by-track recording technique, a style that had seen differing results to their previous material, all the while using vintage equipments to achieve the album’s desired 70’s quality and nuance .
Being fans of the golden era of 70s music, the sounds of ‘Di Persiaran Cakrawala’ had been largely inspired by the likes of artists like The Beatles, Todd Rundgren, ABBA, David Bowie, and also local legends like Sweet Charity, Kembara and the late great Sudirman Haji Arshad. Holding to that as its core, ‘Di Persiaran Cakrawala’ attempts to conceptualize the idea of retro-futurism from the perspective of a Nusantarian, by localizing, and also personalizing, its symbols and themes to fit the album, and the band’s narrative.
In the past, Ramayan had managed to spread their wings, representing Malaysia on international stages and festivals such as Archipelago Fest in Jakarta, Indonesia and Zandari Festa in Seoul, Korea. Aside from that, they have also had the experience of being chosen to open for The Temper Trap in 2017, and shared a stage with Indonesian giants Barasuara and Matajiwa. Having had these experiences, they have developed a vision and a goal; to share their music worldwide.
Betting on a masterpiece, Ramayan wishes once again, that the local TV and radio stations start to have a renewed perspective towards the new sounds of Malaysia, and do not discriminate between what is ‘indie’ and what is ‘mainstream’, so that the Malaysian music industry may once more be filled with variety and internationally recognised music. Ramayan also hopes that their fans will continue to enjoy, understand, support and share their music and their art, so that many may share the same experience.
“I dare say that this album will surely be nominated as one of the best releases of the year, be it indie or mainstream” –Ahmad Faris, TAPAU.
“Surely a single that has gotten me excited for the album”- Zim Ahmadi, Awful Track Record.
