COVID-19 Active Cluster Report - Sivagangga PUI (12.00 pm, 6/8/2020)
KKM INVESTIGATING WHETHER SIVAGANGGA CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO A SUPERSPREADER!

The Ministry of Health (KKM) is investigating whether the Sivagangga PUI Cluster in Kedah, can be attributed to a superspreader virus strain, considering the number of infected cases that this cluster has generated within such a short period of time. A superspreader virus strain in an individual is more likely to infect others, compared with a typical infected person. Such superspreaders are of particular concern in epidemiology. Its effects were seen in Egypt and Pakistan recently.
According to the Director General of the Ministry of Health (KKM) Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, his ministry is studying to see whether the virus from the Sivagangga cluster is a Genome 164 strain, which is a superspreader strain.
Six new COVID-19 cases were reported from the cluster as of 12.00 pm today bringing the total number of infections to 30. As of today a total of 2,351 people were sampled. 1,617 were found negative while 704 were still awaiting results. All of the positive cases that were reported from the cluster today were Malaysian citizens.
The first of the cases (#9032) from this cluster, may have been infected by a close family member who had patronised the index case's restaurant. The 37-year-old woman developed breathing difficulties on 2nd August 2020 and was subsequently admitted to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital on 5th August 2020, after testing positive. Her immediate family has also been screened for the virus and are awaiting the results.
5 others (#9033 - 9037), all members of a family, may have been infected by the virus after visiting one of the areas currently under #TEMCO. They were confirmed positive on 5th August 2020 and have been admitted to the same hospital. The exact source of their infection is still being investigated.
All 6 cases from the Sivagangga PUI cluster today involved Malaysian citiziens. Of the 30 cases so far, only 5 involve foreigners.
