The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur released a new music video recording of Ella's "Standing In The Eyes of The World" as part of the United States Independence Day celebrations, which was done through a special cultural diplomacy collaboration featuring musicians from both the U.S. and Malaysia.
In addition to original singer Malaysia’s "Ratu Rock" Ella and US-based Sarawakian artiste Zee Avi, the music video also features several alumni of American Music Abroad programs, which is a unique, U.S. Government-sponsored exchange program that sends dozens of American musicians around the world each year.
Both Ella and Zee Avi have a close relationship with the US. Ella recorded her multi-platinum 1994 "Ella USA" album in Los Angelos and has recorded with two Guns N Roses guitarists. She also performed alongside Slash on her 1998 hit "Bayangan". Zee Avi was signed to Brushfire who released her 2011 "Ghostbird" album and was the first Malaysian recording artiste to have her album listed on the US Billboard Hot 200 Albums Chart.
According to Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, the US Ambassador to Malaysia, the purpose behind the re-recording of the song and its new music video was to celebrate the cordial relationship, citizens of both countries have enjoyed over the years.
She further commented that the US is proud to announce the new recording of the Malaysian classic, as music was a universal language that transcends borders and brings people together.
The Bahasa Malaysia - English language song was originally written by Boston's Berklee College of Music graduate Datuk Wah Idris, award-winning songwriter Habsah Hassan and American hitmakers Bread's lead singer and songwriter David Gates. The anthemic track was written to commemorate the 1998 Commonwealth Games which Malaysia hosted for the very first time.
The new version also features Malaysian flautist Mohar MOHRAM (Muhardiman Ismail), who opens the proceedings with his traditional Malaysian flute.
The featured Americans include extraordinary guitarist Tony Memmel, former Guns N’ Roses lead guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, a capella group ReVoiced featuring Chris Rossi, Justin Crichfield & Rolin Alexis, all-female country group Farewell Angelina featuring Andrea Young, Nicole Witt, Andrea Benz & Ashley Gearing, percussionist Quincy Brown from the US Air Force's Band of the Pacific and jazz vocalist & songwriter Gabrielle Stravelli.
The US Embassy in Malaysia engaged Helen Yap, a Berklee alumna, to arrange the song and coordinate the singers and musicians from both Malaysia and the USA, over 4 time zones. The track was mixed and mastered by Nick Lee, also a Berklee graduate. Nick also designed Calvary studios, where the recordings of the Malaysian parts were conducted.
As Americans and Malaysian will not be able to gather and celebrate together in person this 4th of July, the new version of "Standing In The Eyes of The World" allows us to highlight our long history of partnership and cooperation.
The song was released yesterday and can be viewed here:
