Malaysia's most celebrated singer Dato' Sri Siti Nurhaliza unleashed another monumental new single for her loyal fans on all digital platforms starting 8th May 2020. "Basyirah" which means happy news in Arabic is the creative effort of singer and iconic composer Hafiz Hamidun with lyrics by the remarkable Ahmad Fedtri Yahya.
Dato Sri Siti Nurhaliza decided to record the song after being intrigued by its Middle Eastern-themed melody, and turned it into her single for the period of Ramadan. The demo for the song was initially received a bit too late by her label Universal Music Malaysia and Siti Nurhaliza Productions to make the cut into her new album. The song was kept in storage until now. Due to the delay in distribution of her latest album, it was decided that Basyirah would be recorded exclusively for Ramadan in conjunction with the current situation and mood.
"The first time I heard the melody, I admit I was overwhelmed and fell in love with its charm. Undoubtedly, during the recording, I was in tears and tried my best to convey the whole meaning of this song with sincerity," Siti shared.
Although the song was released during the festive month, the lyrics does not directly touch on the subject of Ramadan. It is more of a metaphor for the situation the world is facing today with the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"During our production discussion, it was decided that it was a good idea to include lyrics that are relevant to today's situation. The song is intended to promote the hope that one day there will be happy news for Malaysians who are being engulfed by this pandemic," the popular singer expressed. She also hopes that Basyirah will be able to inspire the rest of the world in the face of the outbreak as well as all the front-line personnel who have sacrificed their lives to safeguard our country. The established vocalist also hopes that the song in the mean time will satisfy the craving of fans who were looking forward to the release of her latest album.
As the composer responsible for producing the song, Hafiz admits that Basyirah was presented with its own challenges. "We recorded the song while the country was executing the Movement Control Order. This meant that recording could not be done in the studio as was customary and had to be done separately. Dato 'Sri Siti Nurhaliza had to record the song from home.", Hafiz clarified. "It was quite a challenge because it was a bit complicated and it involved technical issues. But we managed to do it and Dato 'Sri Siti Nurhaliza managed to translate the overall meaning of the song as intended," added Hafiz. The multiple award-winning Hafiz who had previously collaborated with Siti on the song Mikraj Cinta, said he was trying to bring out the best in the song.
"I roughly know how I want a song to be sung. I normally try to come up with something unique and different from what has been done previously, such as emphasizing the phonetic aspects of the pronunciation and also incorporating qasidah elements in it," Hafiz explained. Sharing a similar opinion with Hafiz, Ahmad Fedtri Yahya also revealed that the lyrics of the song had to be revised several times to suit Dato 'Sri Siti Nurhaliza's wishes.
"When I first heard this song the melody was very melancholic and what came to mind was that it was perfect for a heartbreak song. But since Dato 'Sri Siti Nurhaliza wanted the lyrics of this song to be related to the prayers and hopes of the people who want the pandemic to end, I changed the lyrics according to the story that was given. I use many elements of symbolism or metaphors in choosing words, " Fedtri revealed.
Looking at the lyrics, Basyirah clearly invites Muslims to pray to God for peace and comfort in their daily lives during this holy month of Ramadan.
