300 audition for TV show
The Star - Metro, Wednesday June 6, 2007
Budding artiste: Rubisa Tiasin of the northern Sabah district of Kota Belud was among the people who auditioned for the My Starz LG show in Kota Kinabalu recently.
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah¡¯s ¡°raw¡± musical talent is impressing judges in auditions for the My Starz LG reality television show.
¡°We¡¯ve had some really good ones,¡± said Jafni Abu Bakar, the show¡¯s producer who was among the judges in the two-day audition at Centre Point Sabah¡¯s Palm Square from June 3.
He said some of the nearly 300 people who auditioned for the show displayed ¡°quite a bit of talent.¡±
Jafni said judges also received good feedback from the hundreds of people who witnessed the auditioning process.
¡°There were instances when we the judges were not too impressed with a particular person but the audience responded well. So we had to see why,¡± he said.
Jafni added that unlike in Kuala Lumpur and Kuching where the popular song for the My Starz LG hopefuls was Jamal Abdillah¡¯s Harapan, the songs in the Kota Kinabalu auditions were diverse.
¡°We had people singing in Bahasa Melayu and English as well as Bahasa Indonsia. Kota Kinabalu appears to be so cosmopolitan,¡± he said.
The judges for the auditions include the head trainer for the successful candidates, Farihin Abdul Fattah, and the show¡¯s musical director Aubrey Suwito as well as journalist Zieman of the The Star¡¯s Bahasa Melayu portal, M Star.
Sabah was the last stop in auditions for the My Starz LG show being produced by TV3 and NTV7, sponsored by electronics giant LG.
Kicking of at The Curve, Damansara, on May 19, the auditions for singers and songwriters were held in Penang, Johor Baru, Kuching and Pahang before coming to Sabah.
The selected participants will be tutored and receive partially professional advice and training support from some of Malaysia¡¯s top performers and producers.
The mentoring will take place at the My Starz LG House that has a mentor room, a practice area and performing area equipped with LG products.
