Wanted: One super singing sensation
Qualifications: Talent, determination ... the whole package
Age: 16 to 32
Salary: RM1 million
INTERESTED? If you’re one of the many out there who think you have what it takes to be a super singing sensation, but all you lack is the financial means to get you to the top, then look no further – 8TV has the answer to your prayers.
They’re handing RM1 million to the most deserving newly discovered singer in Malaysia.
One In A Million is the next big talent show to hit the Malaysian reality television craze.
But, hosted by the beautiful Marion Caunter and 8TV newbie, Awal Ashaari, this is no ordinary talent show.
Unlike the many other shows of its kind out there that end up discovering new (sometimes questionable) talent, who end up being shipped off to a record label never to be heard from again, One In A Million has decided to handle everything from the auditions right to the production of the album.
So, if you’re signed onboard, get ready for the journey of a lifetime with this amazing opportunity, as the people at 8TV take you on a life-changing trip, while the rest of Malaysia climbs on board to watch your transformation from nothing to not so overnight stardom.
But, come on, handing over a million ringgit to someone who walks off the streets and into the audition room is a little risky, even for the ‘we’re different’ folk at 8TV.
“We’re into big risks, because big risks reap big rewards,” 8TV’s CEO Ahmad Izham Omar said at the One In A Million press conference recently.
“We had trouble choosing our judges because of that though,” he admitted. “Some didn’t want the responsibility of giving RM1 million to the wrong person!”
“There’s a lot of work that goes with this, and the winner has to acknowledge that, but at the same time, we can only push them so far, and if they want to go back to their boring day job after winning the RM1 million, there’s not much we can do about that!” he continued. “You have to be original and different in order to win this,” Izham Omar said. “Because even if you reach the top 10 only, your life will still never be the same again.
“And unlike other reality shows where the winner just gets passed off to a record label, we at 8TV will continue to invest in their dreams, and will manage the winner until he or she really becomes a superstar.”
But, judging from the chosen judges, the contestants will have a hard time getting back to normal life, if they’re lucky enough to make it to the finals.
Judges for One In A Million are none other than the man himself, Paul Moss, and vocal trainer and singer extraordinaire, Syafinaz Selamat.
“Selecting judges wasn’t easy, we had to make sure they have the eye to select the rare gem from all the mud they’ll be seeing! Plus, they must have the talent to guide these contestants through their journey from amateurs to becoming professionals,” Izham Omar said.
“They must have the guts to come up with the hardest and toughest challenges and tests in order to separate the winners from the rest. Nurturing that X-factor is also an important element, and that’s not easy to do.”
The show is based 100 per cent on judges’ votes up until the final 12, where the public are then allowed to vote for their favourite, and with only two judges, it has to be a unanimous vote seeing each contestant through to the next round.
“Paul Moss says it like it is,” Izham Omar said, “and he knows how to get great creativity from creativity.”
“Syafinaz is an all rounder, she’s accomplished as a singer, vocal trainer, lecturer. But the good thing is that the both of them approach music very differently, so I’m looking forward to seeing the fireworks un-fold!”
“I’m really looking forward to this season,” Moss said. “Just before the press conference, I was backstage and Syafinaz asked me what I was looking for in a winner, and I told her I was looking for looks, vocals, the whole package.”
“She said ‘so you’re putting looks before talent then?’ She has pretty much already defined her role on the show – she’ll be keeping me in check!
“But I look forward to working with Syafinaz, Marion and, what’s his name?,” Moss joked about newcomer to 8TV, Awal.
“Yes, that’s right, I’m here to keep an eye on Paul!” Syafinaz laughed. “But seriously, we’re both looking for someone who’s really unique, and we want this person to end up making a difference to the Malaysian music industry.”
“At the end of the day, the most important part is making sure we elevate the Malaysian music industry to the next level,” Izham Omar added.
Main sponsor, TM Net will be providing interactive broadband platforms through the Internet and mobile arenas, in a bid to help anyone around the world tune in to One In A Million.
One In A Million begins its run on 8TV on May 26 and airs every Friday.
THE CONTESTANTS:
ANYONE and everyone is eligible for entry. That’s right, amateurs might be going up against professional singers, all in a bid for the chance of a lifetime, winning RM1 million.
So, don’t be surprised if you come in for your audition, and see Awie, Adibah Noor or even Dayang Nurfaizah sitting around waiting for their chance to meet the judges too, because One In A Million is fair game for everyone!
“Some recording artistes might join just as a promotional gimmick to further promote their existing albums, but that’s a big risk they’re taking,” Izham Omar said. “What happens if they’re upstaged by a newcomer?!” he laughed.
“And on the flip side of that, the amateurs out there should be warned that they might be going up against some established names, so they’d better come prepared and really know what they’re getting into.”
But rest assured there will be no special treatment for any professional artiste that wants to try their luck with One In A Million.
“No, there are no exceptions, they’ll have to audition in front of Syafinaz. And me, just like the rest of the contestants!” Moss said.
IF you think you have what it takes to be the best from all the rest, there are only two auditions; so take your pick, pack your lucky bags and head on down to either Kota Kinabalu or Kuala Lumpur.
Kota Kinabalu
Where: Hotel Le Meridien
When: April 9 to 11, 9am to 6pm
Kuala Lumpur
Where: Berjaya Times Square
When: April 19 to 23, 9am to 6pm
JUDGE PAUL MOSS
“ONCE they’re in the auditions, they’re going to know if they’re in too deep or not,” Moss said about contestants’ abilities.
“Right from the beginning, they need to know what song choices make them sound good; they have to be sure of their talent, and most importantly, where they fit in the music industry.
“Because, if they’re not sure, all this will definitely come out during the elimination period, so don’t waste our time.”
As for how hard the elimination rounds are going to be, Moss says to expect anything and everything.
“We’ve been studying other shows like this from around the world, and we’re looking at all their strengths and weaknesses, in order to find the toughest tests, the best tests, to separate the really great from the ordinary. But trust us on this, there will be no other opportunity like this in Malaysia.
“But, as for telling people what we really think of their performance, you know me, I tell them ‘you suck, get out’, but Syafinaz, I’ve never seen anyone put someone down with such a radiant smile on her face! Now that’s talent,” Moss said.
“You just get lost in her smile and you forget she’s putting you down! I can’t wait to see that on screen!”
Paul agrees that handing over the final responsibility to the public to choose who gets the million is a big risk.
“This is a great show, but there’re a lot of responsibilities involved, even for the judges, to educate the public about what they should be voting for, but I’m confident Syafinaz and I can get that done.”
Moss offers this solid advice to potential contestants and the voting public:
“An interesting way to see whether a person is the right material for this show is to ask yourself, ‘would this person work without the show? Are they relevant to the industry and other markets?”
“Bear in mind, we’re taking this person all the way to other countries’ markets, so it has to be someone who’s worthy of all of it.”
JUDGE SYAFINAZ SELAMAT
“IF I wasn’t a judge, I’d enter this competition myself!” Syafinaz laughed. “Come on! It’s RM1 million, man!”
Syafinaz is very sure of the kind of person they’re looking for.
“We need to find someone unique, with their own style, someone who knows what they want.”
Syafinaz, who’s currently also working on her new album which fuses classical and contemporary music, says she’s happy working with her new team at 8TV.
“It’s been great, so far! For now, anyway, it’s been great!” she joked.
“The important thing for contestants to remember is that they have to be honest and sincere in their audition.
“It makes a difference to your performance. Just be yourself, be honest, and bring something different for us!” Syafinaz advised.
THE HOSTS: MARION AND AWAL
“WE’VE never worked together before, even though we met a long time ago, when he was just reading for 8TV. But look at him now, he’s gone on to be a huge star!” Marion Caunter said of her new co-host, Awal.
“Honestly, it’s an honour for me to be working with Marion, I’ve watched her on TV so often and thought she was out of my league!
“But now, here I am working with her, I’ll be learning a lot from her!” Awal gushed over his new co-star.
“Aw! How sweet! I’ll be learning from you too!” Marion countered.
As Marion and Awal build up the chemistry between them, they’re already working out how to make the most of their on-screen time.
“We’re hoping to put out a lot of fires!” Marion joked.
“But Paul’s a sucker for beautiful women, so as long as Syafinaz keeps that smile, she could get her way!”
Unknown to many out there, Awal was once a contestant in the last big reality show to hit 8TV, Malaysian Idol, only making it to the Top 33.
“Yeah! I initially had a huge passion to be a singer, but after that experience, it transformed to something else!” Awal laughed.
“But it will make it easier for me to relate to the contestants in One In A Million, because I’ve literally been there too!”
But having been kicked out of Malaysian Idol by Paul Moss has thrown Awal in a bit of a predicament, considering he’ll now be working side by side with him.
“That was weird! When I was told by 8TV a week ago that Paul Moss was chosen as a judge, I was like ‘WHAT?!’” Awal said.
“Sorry to say, but I hated that experience!” he said about going up against Paul Moss in his audition rounds, “So, now it’s payback time!” he joked.
Still, jokes aside, that should make for some interesting tense and biting moments on screen.
Being the first time the two hosts have worked together, they’re counting One In A Million as a work in progress for the two of them.
“I’m excited working with Marion, she’s so spontaneous, she’s pretty, she’ll attract all the boys. It’s a great opportunity for me to work with her.”
“Oh, he has so many good points!” Marion said of her co-host.
“I know that sounds corny, but it’s true! His smile, his looks, but he’s not too good looking that he’s not approachable. He’s got that boy next door thing that’s going to be great on screen!”
“This is going to be an ongoing journey for the both of us,” Marion said. “And we’re inviting the public to come along for that journey with us… it’s going to be a lot of fun!”
