The Big Four, an all-male Hong Kong Cantopop group vowed the full house crowd at the Arena of Stars recently with their entertaining performances and outlandish costumes. Four friends, Dicky Cheung, Andy Hui, William So and Edmond Leung, decided to form the group back in 2009 and became one of Hong Kong’s hottest group. The Big Four performed their maiden show here at Putra Indoor Stadium back in 2010. They kicked off their 2013 World Tour in Hong Kong with 6 sold out concerts at the Coliseum and last month they performed at the O2 in London.

The four friends had lots of fun on stage, singing, dancing and joking with the audiences and they showed great chemistry together. It was really like a testament to their relationship and friendship of over 20 years. For the opening, they had a countdown on the big screen starting from number 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 and the number stopped at 4. The Big Four made their entrance in style complete with matching costumes and coordinated dance moves and belted out two of their hit songs “Everyone Good Luck” and “The Big Four”. Andy took the microphone and asked the audience whether they prefer for them to converse in Cantonese or Mandarin during the concert. Dicky added “This is Malaysia, so maybe they want us to speak in Malay” and he went on to say “Tuan Tuan dan Puan Puan” and the crowd cheered loudly. He even continued “I also know how to sing in Malay” and he sang the first line of the chorus of “Rasa Sayang” and this drew thunderous applause from the audience.
The other three members of the group are always making fun of Dicky, mostly about his lack of hit songs and of course his bald head. Edmond said “There is one member of the group who has never improved after all these years and he has never succeeded in doing the reverse push up flip in all our concerts”. A video of the previous concert scene where Dicky did a reverse push up flip but was unsuccessful was shown on the big screen and drew laughter from the crowd.
Andy challenged Dicky to do the flip again and if he succeeds the three of them will give him a big “angpow” each and Dicky agreed. Edmond asked “What if you are not successful?” Dicky replied “If I am not successful then I will give a big “angpow”, not to you guys, but to one of the audience”. They then deliberated on the amount of the “angpow” and as usual, the other three members made fun that Dicky is a very stingy person and the amount could just be RM5.00! In the end the amount went up to RM 1000.00. After this, they started looking for someone from the audience to go up stage and Dicky told him that it was not just to come up and collect the “angpow” but he must also do the same stunt before getting it. But too bad, this person was not successful in doing the flip and they had to call up another person from the audience who managed to do a little flip and he walked away with the RM1000.00 “angpow”.
Each of the members had their share of solo segments belting out their hit numbers. When it came to Andy’s turn, he took to the keyboard and said “For someone who don’t know music and cannot read notes, is a very big challenge to play on the keyboard but today I will not just play one song for all of you” and he went on to sing a medley of songs while playing on the keyboard. When Andy was talking to the audience the fans were shouting “Sammi”, (his girlfriend’s name) and Andy replied with a chuckle “I am talking about music”.
When it came to Dicky’s turn to take the stage, he said “How come when I come out it is different from the other three fellas, no music or sexy dancers? Why, because I don’t need all those. Once I come out, I can just stand and do nothing and I will still get all the thunderous screams from the audience” drawing exactly that from the crowd who cheered him on loudly. Dicky continued “That is the attraction of a mega star”. Dicky told the crowd “All of us are already in our forties and I hereby officially announce that the Big Four is the most popular “Middle-age man group” and our total age combined together is already more than 178 years old”, which is also facing mid-life crisis as well as bald crisis (obviously referring to himself)”. Being the member with the least repertoire, he became the stand-up comedian for the night tickling the audience with his jokes mostly making fun about the other three members and at the same time included a quick costume changing feat.
At one point, the Big Four portrayed a 4 member band performing the theme song “Youthful Ignorance” from the Hong Kong TVB drama which won the best drama for 2012, “When Heaven Burn”. Dicky played the drums, Edmond took on the keyboard and both Andy and William played the guitar. The quartet performed one of their big hits “Unable To Help” before waving their hands and said goodbye. This got everyone shouting for encore and the Big Four came on stage again performing a medley of individual hit songs and at the same time, all four of them went down stage. The crowd went wild and this caused the atmosphere to reach an all-time high as the four of them went around the venue shaking hands with everyone. With this, the foursome ended the first night of their two night’s concert on a perfect note.
