SICK SHOW FROM SICK AVANT POP STAR

Grimes braving through despite being ill, while fellow artiste Ami Dang backing her on vocals.
Canadian experimental-indietronica singer, musician & MV director Claire Boucher, better known by her stage name Grimes, put on quite a sick showcase of her incredible talent in total darkness (except for a few streaks of blue light from the moving head spotlights around her) at her first live concert in Kuala Lumpur, last night at The Bee in Publika. Despite being literally sick after suffering from a serious bout of stomach flu and low blood pressure, the quirky 24 year old artiste trooper-ed on lightheartedly so that her fans who had waited anxiously all night will not go home disappointed. Between water and hurl breaks, the brave critically acclaimed artiste bounced from one eclectic track to another throughout her fourty five minute long presentation with gusto, fueled by the rousing cheers and support from the understanding fans, many who had gathered at the venue as early as 5pm. "Sorry I am late! I got sick with stomach flu. But I got a shot so I should be ok." she stammered while she breezed unto the low stage close to 11pm. "Please don't use your flash guys. I have low blood pressure and it will effect me" continued the plucky Grimes in hushed tones as she tinkled with her electronica set up, before launching into her first track to loud cheers from the capacity crowd that had packed up the intimate venue.
Opening for Grimes earlier in the evening was acclaimed Baltimore based New Delhi born sitar playing electronica artiste Amrita "Ami" Kaur Dang who fuses North Indian classical vocals with noise/ambient electronics. The less familiar Ami who is touring with Grimes, treated the surprised audience with an intense and atmospheric vocal and electronic showcase that combined some serious sitar playing and sangeetam with pumping dance beats, which was a major bonus for fans attending Grimes' concert here in KL, as they got two top independent acts performing back to back on the same night, thanks to the fast rising Upfront series hosted and organised by The Bee.
