Run Up To APM 2007

This Sunday (15th July 2007) will see over 300 contestants from 7 countries vying for honours at the Asia Pacific Masters Dance Championships which will be held at the Grand Ballroom, Shangri-la Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The competition features 3 championships; Line Dancing, Hip Hop & Belly Dancing in a total of 28 categories, This 3rd installment of the yearly competition is organised by renowned line dancing school Joyclub Dance Academy which is owned and operated by Joanne Wong, former World Line Dance 2nd Runner Up (2004) and her husband Alvin Loong.

Expect to see top amateur & professional dancers from Singapore, The Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Iran, and of course, our very own Malaysia, competing strongly for top spots in this hotly contested affair, with the youngest of competitors being only 5 years old and the oldest over 60. The competition which is sanctioned by Masters In Line UK and is supported by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia will be on from 10.00am to 5pm for the day events and the gala dinner and finals will be on from 7pm to midnight. The event will be officially graced by Y.B. Datuk Ir. Donald Lim, Deputy Minister for Tourism. To attest to the popularity of this competition, the gala dinner has been completely sold out weeks in advance but there are still limited tickets (@ RM 80.00) available for the day events which will feature all the preliminary action, semifinals as well as the finals for certain categories.

Final preparations for the weekend.

The main focus of the one day event is line dancing which has grown exponentially as one of the most popular forms of social dancing and can be enjoyed by both the young and old. Often mistaken for cowboy dancing and associated to County & Western music, line dancing is much more than that as it can be enjoyed & executed with any form of music, regardless of genre. It is a healthy and active form of social dancing which is extremely suitable for all races. According to Joanne, line dancing can even be done with Malay, Chinese and Bollywood music which is fast becoming popular in Asia. In the competition, every competitor will have to execute internationally sanctioned preset routines (step sheets) to pre selected music based on the Vanila & Variation rules. That means the footwork is already pre choreographed but they can add their own styling, character & variations to their moves to stand out among the rest based on the prescribed rules. They will be judged on their technique, synchronization, sharpness, personality among other things, by a panel of well known international and local adjudicators.

Line dancing will include solo, duo and team events while belly dancing which is also fast gaining popularity will have both individual & troupe events. The ever popular hip hop will feature team events.

There will be also special performances at the competition by World Superstar Champions Rachael McEnany & Paul McAdam, and UK Top Competitor Sydney Smith, who recently held a special workshop on line dancing at Joyclub Dance Academy.

I have been a avid fan of line dancing and has been looking forward to this competition yearly. This is the 3rd year for me and my friends throwing away our money buying dinner tickets.

Year one competitors are just OK, no doubt we see quite a bit of loop side winners (more of JoyClub student winning eventhough it's obvious they dont qualify).
Year Two - More dissappointment as the competition are designed for specific person to win (Of course, you guess it right, Joyclub students who again dont seems to qualify)
Year three now, my friends and I vowed that we will never again be an avid fan to this organizer. Why, There's so so little competitors from other school. All good ones are being eliminated during the day, thus, by night, you are just wasting your time. Worst, you see only ONE obvious winner - the one girl on the poster. I was there during the day and mine you, I was really dissappointed with the night. When they announce the winner, there's no more excitement anymore as you know who is going to win regardsless who are competiting.

What a great dissappointment... From the way I see it, it is very obvious that this competition are designed just to promote the white dress girl who win all category she joined. However, when I say durng the day and night, I saw quite a few that can beat her outright but not in the finals during the night. WHY? Is that the reason on why lesser competitors are this competition organized by this organizer? End of the day, there's only one thing that make us very happy... we go home with many goodies of Lee Kum Kee......

juliestar, well, there's so many jugdes that day. i think it's really fair judgement for all the categories. a dancer can only win if he/she got what it takes to be a champion. i'm quite sure the judges know what they want in a great dancer. and a great dancer will improve themselves, instead of dropping their status. these competitions organized by joyclub are never designed for a specific person. think from another side, when a dancer got champion, that doesn't mean he/she should stop joining competitions and let somebody else win, that's not really fair then. every dancer that took part on that day gave effort to compete, the difference is just who nailed it in the end. if u said the results is too obvious, it proves the champion really has what it takes to be a real champion.
