As Malaysia gears up for the next Miss Malaysia Universe to take over from the stunning Deborah Henry, we take a look at one of the girls who just happens to shine a little brighter among the striving contestants.
Kimberley Leggett, a statuesque 18 year old model and student from Penang, managed to catch my eye with her exotic British-Malaysian looks and maturity beyond her years.
Here’s a look at what Kim has to say about competing with a bevy of beauties for Malaysia’s most coveted title.
What influenced you to join Miss Malaysia Universe 2012?
Deep down as a little girl watching the Miss Universe pageants on TV, I couldn’t stop but imagine that one day I would be as confident as they. It has always been that little dream inside, that I could one day represent Malaysia, so when I heard that the Miss Universe Malaysia 2012 Pageant would be held with a year’s training in advance for the hopefuls, I knew it was my time to take a chance! I feel like it's in this one year of training that I can really put my heart and soul into one day doing my country proud!
How would you define beauty?
Beauty is hard to define, because it's different and unique to every individual but one thing does stand out- confidence is one of the most beautiful things that anyone can possess. It's untouchable.
Who is your role model?
My role model is my mum. She's been my sister, best friend as well as my mother and has always fully supported me in my ventures- however crazy or spontaneous they may be!
If you were crowned Miss Malaysia Universe 2012, how would you use your title?
I would like to encourage the new 1Malaysia, the younger generation, to be more involved. I want to encourage a way of living where the youth think about their future; to make sure it's a healthy lifestyle and with that, to not have to worry about their health as they grow older. My parents and I were involved in car accidents recently– a creepy coincidence during my involvement in this pageant- and I want to promote safe driving, especially among the youth and those who have just started driving.
Which of the contestants do you see as strong competitors?
Everyone is strong! It's really a 'may the best girl win' situation.
Describe your personal fashion style
I believe my fashion style is eclectic. I enjoy wearing different styles of clothing but I would probably describe my style as ‘street chic’!
Name three fashion items which you cannot do without
Big hoop earrings, blazer, and skinny jeans
Beauty vs Brains : which is your choice, if made to choose
I would choose brains. Beauty can get you far, but it has an expiry date whereas brains last you a lifetime.
Do you agree that good looks make life easier?
It may seem that a 'pretty face' gets her way more often than not, however it also makes life a lot harder due to the stereotypes placed upon her. In business settings for example, I believe you have more to prove as you need to show that there's substance behind the outer appearance.
Do you have any words of wisdom for anyone who would like to content in a Miss Malaysia pageant?
Believe in yourself, be determined, don't give up and listen to others.
There we have it, a beauty queen in the making. Don’t forget to catch Kim Leggett and other gorgeous girls compete for the Miss Malaysia Universe title, on ‘BeautyCamp : The Search For The Next Miss Universe Malaysia 2012’ on ASTRO Channel #705 every Thursday at 3.30pm & with repeats at 9.00pm.
