International College of Music (ICOM) is the premier college of contemporary music in Malaysia and the Asian region offering formal education in contemporary music, audio production and music business at an undergraduate level.
Established in November 1995, the college opened its doors to its first intake in January 1996. The college received an intake of 16 students for the first semester of operations and another 16 in its second semester. With a total of 30 students pursuing an education in the highly specialised field of music, the college successfully completed its first year of operations.
Currently, ICOM has 200 students registered in its programmes. Our courses meet the demands of the music industry, which is looking for qualified music professionals to take on the challenging roles of arranger, songwriter, producer, engineer, performer, manager, entrepreneur and a host of other creative positions. Graduates of ICOM are readily accepted by the music industry as our students are well prepared to meet the needs and demands of a thriving industry.
The Ministry of Education, Malaysia, approves all courses run at ICOM.
In 2000, ICOM was awarded its ISO 9000:1994 certification which further endorses that the college has established quality assurance policies within its operations and has developed an effective quality management system to manage the operations of the college. In 2003 ICOM received the ISO 9001:2000 with full honors.
Further to this, ICOM achieved MSC status in 2005. The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) is Malaysia's most exciting initiative for the global information and communication technology (ICT) industry. Spanning 15km X 50KM, the MSC It is one of Malaysia's main projects to achieve Vision 2020 of a fully developed nation. As such only companies that meet stringent criteria of developing and using multimedia technologies to produce or enhance their products and services and for process development qualify for this status and recognition. ICOM is first and only college to receive the MSC status for music.
Since 1996 the college has played a prominent role in shaping and moulding both the personal image and musicianship of the many students who have passed through its doors. ICOM has established herself as an icon to past and current students and as an aspiration to future music students.
ICOM has one of the best, if not the best music facility, in the Asia Pacific region and ranks among the best-equipped music colleges in the world. Thus far, the college has invested RM 50 million in ensuring that its facilities are at par, if not better than, the leading music colleges in the world. Its six-storey building is solely dedicated to the teaching and learning of music at its highest standards. The facilities provided at the college are as follows:
1. Recital Hall
The recital hall has a seating capacity of 150 people, enabling for the staging of various concerts. In addition, it is also serves as the venue for special seminars, clinics and master classes.
The hall is equipped with a 24-channel live console, which also allows for industry-standard recording of events and concerts. The hall is fully equipped with a baby grand piano, keyboards, amplifiers and a full set of gamelan.
2. Synthesiser Laboratory
The synthesiser laboratory functions as both classroom and laboratory, allowing students to receive hands-on instruction and supervised private practice time in the finer points of computer and synthesiser programming, production and performance. Each workstation in the lab is equipped with a sound module, apple computer, keyboard, mixer, and patch bay module.
3. Keyboard Laboratory
The laboratory is equipped with keyboards and synthesisers and functions both as a classroom and a laboratory. It allows students to receive hands-on instruction in piano and keyboard related studies.
4. Multimedia Laboratory
This laboratory is fitted with iMac computers and provides the facility to burn CDs, access the Internet, utilise word processing software and stream audio/video. The laboratory is also equipped with Finale and Protools software. Student may take advantage of these facilities to work on their assignments and projects with the latest in audio and music software.
5. Ensemble Rooms
The ensemble rooms of various sizes have been specially constructed with acoustic materials and are designed for ensemble sessions where every imaginable style of music can be played. The ensemble rooms are equipped with a piano, synthesiser, bass amplifier, guitar amplifier, self-powered mixer and a five piece drum set.
6. Private Practise Rooms
The college has thirty eight acoustically treated practice rooms, including twenty piano rooms, four drum rooms equipped with five piece drum sets and the remaining fifteen for other principal instruments such as saxophone, guitar, bass, trumpet, clarinet, trombone and voice.
7. Recording Studio
The college maintains a multi-track recording studio, which is at par with international industry standards. It has acoustically treated rooms designed specifically to facilitate recording of drum kits, vocals and other acoustic instruments.
It comes fully equipped with a 48-channel AMEK console with full automation, 24-track recorder, sound modules, effects, synthesisers, high-end microphones, 2-track mastering equipment, CD-mastering facilities and digital recording facilities.
8. Library
The college maintains a large collection of reference books of music, scores, compact discs, music videos, journals, magazines and periodicals to enable students to carry out independent research in the various genres of contemporary music. About 90% of the library holdings are sourced directly from the United States of America and the United Kingdom. The library is also equipped with both audio and visual equipment.
9. Digital Recording/Mixing Suite
In line with the innovative move towards digital audio by the industry, the college has invested in Protools digital audio workstations that enable digital recording, non-linear editing and fully automated mixing as well as mastering. The studio is also equipped with a digital mixer with dynamic automation and built-in processing.
