Wow! Thanks, dragon! I must say I'm impressed with the new set, it allows the contestants to use the stage more, to interact with the viewers in the studio.

Episode 6 (Top 12) Review
My sincere apologies for this late review of Episode 6 (Top 12). The Christmas week has been really hectic and has taken up all my time.
Strange one this Episode 6. Episode 5 (Top 20) showed so much promise of all the top 12 bar 1, that I hate to think that most of them were just one song wonders. Episode 6 was probably the worst start to a live episode of 2 seasons of OIAM & 2 seasons of Malaysian Idol. It was unfortunately a major disaster for most of the contestants. Even the ones that did well, never really impressed, and I am talking about top runner Sarah & dark horse Shone. Multiple award winning artiste Sarah was probably at her finite best with “Listen” but she hardly grabbed the bull by the horns. Even so, she was miles ahead of everyone else. As for Shone, he managed to redeem himself from the shoddy performance of the week before with a reasonably inspired rendition of Estranged’s “Itu Kamu”, but still has a long way to go if he wants to seize a million RM. Sarah should be good enough to reach the final 3 but after that anything goes. Shone most likely has a harder ride to get there but should be safe this week.
As for the rest, it was much pretty much a slide from the week before.
Club singer Ab, actually wasn’t that bad with his sun soaked version of Samson’s “Naluri Lelaki” but it was still not the best that we should expect from him, based from what we have seen previously. He certainly “ticked all the right pop boxes” as Paul Moss put it but I have to agree with Syafinaz that he was rather inaudible on most parts. Should be a safe bet for a few more episodes at the very least and is likely one of the main contenders in season 2.
Let’s be honest here, Tiara may be a sweet young lass (perhaps even a little too sugary and manja-ish for many) but a singer she is certainly not although she may be able to carry a tune or two. It would be hardly appropriate to pan her for her superlite performance as both the judges (especially Paul) did, but she cannot be faulted for getting such false hopes from such luminaries such as Paul & Syafinaz. After all they are the ones who put her through to the top 12, even when they should have known better. So if anyone is going to be panned for her monotone & quivering “How To Touch A Girl”, it should really be the judges. Hey, Paul!!! You have to know “How To Pick The Girl” first. Nevertheless, I believe Tiara may still be around for another week.
Joni is not the next Suki Low, even if many may see it that way. For starters, Suki was more capable technically and had a bigger range. I am still wondering why the sweet & gentle Joni auditioned with her guitar when she wasn’t planning to use it in the competition. I have to totally agree with Paul that it would have added an extra element to her and earned her some plus points. It would have also masked any discrepancies in her vocal proficiency and would have given her a signature style which would have endeared her to her supporters and earned her a few more fans and votes. Her shaky, flat & extremely pitchy “Tattoo” exposed her lack of vocability and may have set her back a bit. Not exactly the birthday wishes she would have wanted. Among the bottom 3 this week for me, but I think she will still will be around for another.
For me Rony is one of the real singers in this competition, having been in the club & band scene for some time and earning the respect and admiration of his peers.. He has a wonderful tonal quality to his voice which I have to agree wholeheartedly with Syafinaz, and has the technical ability and the confidence to deliver timeless performances. But somehow, and amazingly, Rony lost it completely with his “Aku Mahu” midway through the song. What happened dude? It doesn’t help that Paul thinks you are too old for OIAM, and will not be well received by the younger audience, (which makes me wonder why the upper age limit of this competition needed to be 32 then, and why in the world did Paul put him through to the top 12 if he thought Rony will not have a shot at the million) but screwing up the chorus is not going to help either. I hope this setback does not damage his chances as I believe this fun loving guy is a decent contender and hope that he will be around to really showcase his talents. Hopefully his rock fraternity brothers in arms will be able to save him from the exit this week.
The worst possible start for Iz, and it went even further downhill from then on. His “Wait For You” was messy at best, and certainly did not showcase his talent. I am sure he knows it too. Perhaps he was trying too hard to impress that he lost the fluency. Sorry dude, it was no where near Elliot Yamin. He may be in the danger zone this week.
Intan started off interestingly enough but ended miserably. Not the type of performance you would expect from an established singer as herself. She was struggling to sustain notes and was quivering throughout. Paul thought her “Sampai Menutup Mata” was a sad song & a sad performance, and Syafinaz thought it was shacky, pitchy and lacking dynamics. Sadly I have to agree. Luckily Paul doesn’t speak Malay or he may have added “Sampai Mentup Telinga” She has to do a lot more refining if she wants to get there and be a contender. Hopefully her fans will save her for another try at it.
An emotional, aggressive and highly charged performance from Ayu, but it was mostly shouty towards the end. For me an old school rendition of “Samudera” may not provide the right bait to woo the main demographics of 8TV’s very urban viewers. And this competition is all about getting viewers on your side, so that they will spend an enormous sums of money to keep you around every week. Perhaps a more contemporary number would have been better to keep the audience engaged. Paul did say Ayu was singing to herself. Although I believe Ayu did heaps better than most of the rest, I seriously feel that she is in serious jeopardy this week, simply because she may have not enamored herself to the voting public and at this point I cannot visualize who would be voting for her.
Aiyoh, Mark!!! That was really a bad “No Promises”. When I heard the first 2 lines of his performance, I was thinking, wow, this is going to be really good. Unfortunately he switched gear on his third line and went uncontrollably downhill from there on. Enough said. I hope the “package” will save you this week.
I love 2004 Bintang RTM winner Rina’s husky vocals but unfortunately this week’s performance exposed her limitations rather abruptly. Perhaps she was just reaching too high with Christina Aguilera’s “Hurt”. She may have been brave to give it a shot but a little foolhardy nevertheless, especially when there was no colour or dynamics to her rendition. She sounded flat throughout and was unable even to reach the mid tones accurately, and ended up sounding like someone with a sore throat rather than a husky voice. She has a lot more to do if she wants disprove Paul’s comment that she is a “one trick pony and all she has is a husky voice”. Not to worry though, as I believe she should be around a little longer for a chance to redeem herself.
I know Shila can sing but she has to stop singing like she was still a child star. Her “Too Little Too Late” might literally be just the omen she will not be hoping for. It was shaky, weightless and excruciatingly sharp in parts, and she was struggling to maintain the melody. At times I thought it was a 12 year old singing. She is certainly talented but it certainly did not come across in that performance. Perhaps she is still in transition from a child singer to an adult one and is struggling to adjust. Time will tell. She should be around for another week at the very least.
Based on this week’s overall performance, I think most of the contestants may have taken the foot of the pedal after sailing into the top 12. Perhaps, a little over confidence may have seeped in. Hopefully the judges’ harsh comments & displeasure with their performances will shake them up a little and work in their favour in Episode 7 (Top 10) for those who are still around.
The above comments are made in good faith in the hopes that it will help point the contestants in the right direction, and is as honest, as direct and as constructive as possible. It is not intended to put anyone down, as I believe most of them do have the requisite talent to win this competition, but need to work a lot harder in order to get there. I have found that family, friends & fans are normally clouded in their judgment because of their closeness to their favourites, and are unlikely to tell them the truth and will normally give them a false sense of security, which is really detrimental the contestants progression in this competition. After all the bulk of the voters are not parts of the inner circle of the contestants and will decide based on what they see & hear weekly.
For those who do not make it to the Top 10, I wish you guys good luck and to never give up the dream, and to do everything possible to get there. For the rest, battle on with your best foot & voices forward.
