Rentak Sejuta Weekly Review: Episode 7 ¡V Top 16
Rehersals
First of all, apologies for the late review, as I was away over the weekend and it has been a little hectic this week as well, so it was impossible to find the time. But anyway it¡¦s better late then never. Of course, some would have preferred it as never. Ha! Ha!
We got a lot of flak from a few disgruntled forumers from our last review, and we decided we are not really gonna change our style just to please everyone. We were not really bothered by most of the comments made but we did take offense when our integrity to be fair was questioned. We only write what we see or feel, based on watching the live show and several repeat watches on video, and also the feedback we get from the fans, judges & the contestants as well. It does not favour any single contestant and will be different every week, if forumers would care to examine carefully, before lashing out. We can almost guarantee that the same few will not be happy again with what we write this week, and to them we will still come out looking biased, no matter who shines this week. Enough of that for now but let me forewarn you all that there is definitely gonna be some major surprises this week with regards to our rankings.
Wirda & Adam form 8TV
The competition between the contestants has certainly heated up this week (on & off screen), as every one of them raised their game from the last episode, as they slowly start getting into the groove. But unfortunately it may have been too late for some. Even some of the stronger contenders were lucky to escape eliminations, thanks to the masses of loyal fans they had intelligently cultivated, from the very beginning.
Chris' fans
Roboman 2? One of Chris' friend showing off his moves.
Even the competition between the fans seemed to have gone fiery too, with angry aunties, hostile clans, and space hoggers all thrown into the fray, and into the limelight. But I guess it all adds to the appeal of the show.

I didn't know i had fans as well. LOL!!!
How did they fair this week?
Both Alice & Chris executed their Malay Contemporary routine without much ado, but it was clearly a struggle for Chris. Not only was he void of the emotion that should have accompanied the mood of the piece, he was also shaky in executing all the lifts involved, probably due to his physical stature. In order to ¡§lembut¡¨ himself for the showcase, he just became too willowy and his worried expression didn¡¦t help much either. It was so clear that he was out of his comfort zone, and was feeling it. Alice on the other hand did all her moves to perfection, but it was just too ¡§happy¡¨ for me. Both of them were dancing together, but each of them was telling a different story.
It was definitely a high energy & heart pumping performance from both Nikki & Yuz, but I didn¡¦t think Nikki was on par with even herself. In fact, I think Nikki has lost her Hip Hop edge, probably due to the fact that she was being softened up week after week, to handle other gentler genres. Yes, there was fire in her hips, but it was more of a bonfire than a forest in flames. Don¡¦t get me wrong, she wasn¡¦t bad at all, but the hardness has gone, and it showed. Yuz, however, was quite a revelation. It was crystal that he made the extra effort to understand the culture and to represent it, even though he is not one with it. When he came out on stage, I thought 8TV had switched him with some New York native from the ghetto. Not only did he dance the part, he looked it too, right down to the attitude. If I didn¡¦t know it was Yuz I could have sworn it was Mario Van Peebles (an African American Hollywood action star). It was a commendable performance from both, but I thought the routine could have used a little more tricks, booty shaking not being one of them, although it did please the crowd. I am certain both of them are strong enough to execute a more technical display.
Watching Alam & Noor is like watching a beautiful piece of moving art. It is just so captivating and intense. The emotional connection is so thick that you can cut it with a butter knife. Both of them can just wrap this up right now and take it on the road already. Not need to even bother with winning SYTYCD. They have never failed to impress everyone throughout the series as yet, and have not failed this week either, even though it was a simpler and less technically demanding routine. Both of them truly understand what dancing is about and are meant to make it their destiny.
Put two strong, well trained and experienced dancers together and you would expect an explosion. Sadly it was not to be, although it had its moments where it could have been. It was obvious this week that Firul was energized by the fact that he had a more technically capable & extremely competitive partner in Brancy to embark on more challenging routines, and he certainly was back, as Pat Ibrahim put it. Both of them did not disappoint in their intricate performance but unfortunately a couple of fumbles in their lifts put a damper to the whole performance. Perhaps in their exuberance to get ahead, they attempted to pull of too technically difficult moves, way too soon, after their pairing up. The final ¡§lambung roti canai¡¨ move was jaw dropping though, but unfortunately it was not as seamless as it should have been. But kudos to them for giving it a good shot. I am certain they will be back stronger and better in the next episode.
It was pleasant to see a change of pace this week when we were treated to a more elegant dance style in foxtrot this week, and partners Jo & Jimmy certainly didn¡¦t disappoint. Jo was the epitome of grace and elegance throughout the routine and mesmerized everyone in the audience. She was just so beautiful to watch. Jimmy was just as charming and matched Jo equally as well in the routine, but at moments he was a little stiffy and not as conspicuously fluid as he should have been. I agree with Pat that he was not suave enough. It was like Daniel Craig becoming James Bond. Minor niggles aside; it was still competently executed, and was delightful to watch.
It was another high voltage performance from Dennis & Becky. Dennis was clearly in his element (coming from a cheerleading background) and executed all his moves with near perfection and was oozing out adrenaline in barrels. His lifts were strong and controlled. Becky was just as efficient but there were some glaring mistakes in her execution and it lacked certain finesse. After much review I absolutely agree with the judges the timing was not as perfect as it should have been and it was visibly off towards the end, although the contestants may beg to differ. As for the routine, apart from the interlocking hand moves and the lifts, it was pretty straightforward and would not have been out of place in any aerobics class in KL or in mall performances. Overall it was good enough a performance to the keep the crowd happy, but I imagine the pumping music contributed as much to it as well.
¡§Samba Belacan¡¨ it was, indeed, when Sue & Isaac¡¦s absolutely sizzling & highly flammable performance blew the crowd away. Wow!!! Wow!!! Wow!!! Where did that all come from? Do I even need to say more? You all know what I mean. Every move was just perfect and deliciously sexy. It would have made even serious couch potatoes wanna stand up and boogie too. Every line, every twist, every turn, every gyration was perfect. Both of them were just bursting to be with each other, and the energy on stage was so infectious, that I bet every one in the audience wanted to be on stage gyrating with them. Sue was simply ravishingly gorgeous and her performance was magnificent, and her partner Isaac was no less engaging and delectable. And Pat was so wrong to say that Isaac was ¡§sort of there¡¨. He was SO THERE, abang Pat. I guess Pat was distracted by chilli hot Sue, he wasn¡¦t looking at Isaac as much. Ha! Ha! Well never mind. Anyway, this couple has certainly thrown down the gauntlet and the rest of the contestants better watch out.
So hangat!!!
Doesn't she look gorgeous?
Remarkably, the couple that got the loudest cheers of the night was Orange & Vish. It may not have been the most eloquent execution of dancehall (at least by Vish, anyway) but the spirit of dancehall was more than evident in their performance. Dancehall routines may look simple to the naked eye but it is difficult, intricate and exhausting to execute, while sustaining the energy levels required making it vibrant. Both Orange & Vish did raise the temperature with their very vibrant and entertaining performance. Orange clearly demonstrated that she is a gifted dancer and Vish certainly showed that he was not going take this lying down, even with his limitations and physical shortcomings. This is certainly the most fun couple to watch, and this week, I enjoyed their performance the most. Not only did they entertain me, they made me feel like jumping up and dancing too.
Nothing chilly about these abominable snowmen
It was no surprise to see both Chris & Alice in the bottom 4, but I am sure the audience was surprised to see both Jimmy & Becky there. I was half expecting to see Vish in the bottom 4, but I wasn¡¦t really sure which girl should share the spotlight with him. I was forewarned to expect surprises, and the judges certainly did surprise quite a few.
The crowd decided the rest, so there is really nothing much else to say about that.
William from williamluisa.net, the choregrapher for Sue/Isaac & Jo/Jimmy looking pretty happy with the show.
Sharing a moment with both Alice & Chris who were out but not down.
Points to note this week, is that, strong & experienced dancers like Brancy, Becky, Jo & Noor, are clearly being challenged by the likes of Sue & Orange, who have stepped up their game. Most of the guys are on par, with the exception of Vish (but don¡¦t be too surprised if he steps up his game). Isaac has also shown everyone that he is one of the main contenders and is not to be taken lightly, and Dennis is likely to follow suit too.
This week's Rentak Sejuta¡¦s rankings may surprise you all a little (may be a lot):
1.Sue & Isaac
2.Orange & Vish
3.Alam & Noor
4.Brancy & Firul
5.Jo & Jimmy
6.Dennis & Becky
7.Nikki & Yuz
8.Alice & Chris
Fire away!!!
