The moment of truth for dance in Malaysia has finally arrived. And it arrived in a bold and in your face sort of way, at Ruums KL, on Thursday night. The atmosphere at the venue was phenomenal as throngs of dance fans turned the place into an arena worthy of this competition. At times it felt like we accidentally wandered into the grand finale of ¡§So You Think You Can Dance¡¨, instead of the very first live episode of the show. It was just that charged up and I am absolutely certain that the contestants also felt the energy around them. I certainly did and I am sure the rest of the fans who came well prepared and being equally as competitive as well, felt it too.
The crowd just couldn't wait to get in.
Firul's friends waiting eagerly to get in.
Even our famous Kaiyeh and resident RS scribe was there to cover the show
So were these friends of Azzy's.
It was the perfect response for a reality show that is so brand new, different and yet untested in Malaysia, especially since dance culture suffers from being considered by many as a commercially non viable form of employment, where the big bucks have always eluded it. It was quite clear at Ruums KL on Thursday night that any pre conceived notion that dance was going to play second fiddle to music & singing, quickly went out the door. At the very least, if the legions of fans that quickly occupied every inch of space around the beautifully crafted stage, and were begging for more, had anything to say about it.
From where I was perched, which was right next to the judges table, I could clearly make out scores of people in the swelling crowd, who had every intention of letting everyone know who they were there for. The battle was already raging well before the clarion of the competition even sounded, with all manner of battle gear being brandished about so soon in the competition, and the early favorites were easily distinguishable, from the lot of them. I will just let the pictures tell the story.
This one like wedding potrait only. LOL!!!
Looks like Dennis brought his own cheerleading squad - captained by mum & dad
LiverFIRUL Supporters Club???
Sue's the what...
Brand new togs for Jimmy's supporters - 25 tees to be exact. Hmmm!!! Will Rentak be getting any complimentary Jimmy tees?
The judges for the night included permanent judges, director/choreographer Pat Ibrahim & Malaysian dance legend Ramli Ibrahim, and dance coach Linda Jasmine as guest judge, whom were all tasked with the responsibility of weeding out four of the weakest for elimination by the voting public. The stakes were certainly high for all of the contestants, as 2 of the contestants from the unfortunate 4 would very quickly see their dreams shattered and would be leaving the show no sooner than they had arrived.
The firing squad getting prepped up
Based on the final selection of the night of Alice, Azzy, Shake & Vish as the bottom 4, it was quite clear that the judges were not going to be as sympathetic as they were earlier in the show. And with such luminary judges at the helm, it was quite difficult to disagree with their choices, although I did find it a little surprising to see Vish in the bottom 4. All I got from Pat Ibrahim was a barely recognizable comment, a shoulder twist away from me and a finger pointed in the direction of the other judges, when I expressed my surprise to him. Yikes!!! Anyway it wasn¡¦t a biggie, and I am sure they had their valid reasons, but the part that really irked me about the judging was the judges¡¦ comments throughout which was pretty mundane, dull, occasionally incomprehensible (in the case of Ramlie with his non layman dissertations) and severely lacking the creativity, energy and passion that was shown on stage. Where¡¦s the sambal, mustard or rasam, guys? Perhaps, they need a page out of ¡§The Paul Moss¡¦ Ultimate Guide to Saying It in Your Face¡¨, as reference. Hopefully it will be more flavorsome next week.
Looking at the nights performances, some of the contestants definitely brought their A game on, and were quite determined to stake their positions at the top. It was interesting to see Dennis continue to ¡§Paso Doble-ing¡¨ the judges even while they were delivering their judgments. He was completely into character, and was entertaining the crowd even when he had already stopped performing, much to the enjoyment of his boisterous fans. Jo¡¦s experience clearly shined through as well, and Nikki and Yuz with their captivating Malay Contemporary display, were easily one of the crowd favorites, as were the almost innocent like and very emotive story telling of Alam & Noor. These two pairs clearly made the crowd go wild with excitement and adoration. Even Orange & recently ¡§Orange¡¨ haired Vish had their moments in the Latin Salsa ensemble, with Orange looking very much a stirring contender, although, outmatched Vish, nevertheless, still managed to soldier on, without losing his energy and passion. What he lacked in his footwork, he showed it in his ¡§heartwork¡¨.
Shake & Jo start off the competition
Sultan Mansur Shah & Puteri Hang Li Poh???
Which boot camp did Azzy & Jimmy come from???
Orange and "Orange" top.
Robojazz anyone?
The picture of innocence
But the night really belonged to Brancy & Sean, whose creative, technically impressive, passionate and rock solid performance, clearly set the stage on fire and had many hearts in the audience racing with glee. These two were the perfect companions who looked and danced the part, to the satisfaction of everyone present. We look forward to more wonderful interpretations from them in the coming weeks, whoever their partners may be.
PGL2??? The ultimate warriors - Sean & Brancy
Eye Candy???
Of course, it¡¦s never pleasant to watch someone leave the show, especially so immediately, but I am not terribly disappointed with the choices of the voting audiences. The visibly flustered Azzy was the weakest and the least impressive as a dancer, and was rightfully given the early exit. Shake on the other hand was unfortunate not to be able to show off his moves in a dance style not common to his own, thus was unable to showcase anything new to the voters and show his versatility. This lack of difference is what sent him home, I suppose. But I do admire him for his happy go lucky nature and total lack of agony in defeat.
The contenders have already set the stage for an exciting and definitely interesting season of SYTYCD, and I believe Malaysia is going to enjoy the experience of something totally different and inspiring in the next couple of months. A great start to a brand new show, from what is proving to be an excellent TV station and I highly recommend the home viewers to get off their living room sofas and drag their heavy bottoms to the live shows at Ruums KL every single week and shake your booties alongside your favorites. Who knows you may be even compelled to compete next season.
The gang from Rentak Sejuta will never miss any 8TV event.
Especially the ladies, when such hotties like Dmitri were around.
