South Korean k-pop group iKON returned to Malaysia, for the second time with a boisterous and show-stopping concert at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam. last night. Organized locally by MacpiePro, the concert featuring YG Entertainment's popular all boy vocal pop group, did not disappoint the fans.
Opening up with their hit ‘Bling Bling’, the 7-member group, comprising of B.I., Bobby, Jay, Ju-ne, Song, DK, and Chan entered the stage ceremoniously through a platform in the middle of the stage. All 7,000 fans in the crowd went wild as they waved their baseball bat shaped ‘konbats’, the official lightstick of iKON.
Following ‘Bling Bling’ was a remixed version of ‘Sinosijak’, a rock rendition of 'Rhythm Ta', ‘Cocktail’, and ‘Only You’. Their stage presence and charisma radiated through every verse and every step the energetic group sang and took, showing off their well-honed dance skills. Following the engaging medley was ‘Perfect’, a melancholic ballad that showed off the vocal colours of the group.
Next up was group leader B.I.’s solo number, ‘One and Only’. B.I. sat on a throne as he performed, showing off the larger-than-life styling of YG Entertainment. Bobby’s solo, ‘Holup!’ came next. Rapping with fierce confidence, he strutted around the stage while he pouring his swagger through his lyrics. The two rappers then joined forces for their hip-hop track, ‘Anthem’, with the other members consequently joining them for the upbeat ‘B-Day’.
‘My Type’ and ‘Rubber Band’ came next, both sweet songs that combined an R&B vibe with a dash of their signature hip-hop sound. It was followed up by a short conversation with the audience about best friends, prompting the members of the group pairing up for their next song appropriately titled ‘Best Friend’. As the members sang, leader B.I. came out dressed in a cute baby chick onesie, making the fans scream wildly. They then followed with ‘Everything’, which was a fusion of rap, pop, and house.
iKON then left the stage, while a video package about the catchy earworm ‘Love Scenario’ which had news segments about the phenomenon of elementary school kids in Korea singing along to it, was screened,. Included in the clip were endearing bits of little kids singing to the song as well. When the first line of ‘Love Scenario’ echoed through the stadium, enthusiastic fans sang and danced along with iKON.
After ‘Love Scenario’, iKON surprised iKONICs by performing their comeback song ‘Goodbye Road’ for the first time in a stadium! It was a sentimental song about a farewell to a loved one through a break-up. Despite the lyrics having a sorrowful topic, fans soaked it all up as iKON performed it with their hearts on their sleeves.
The tracks that came after the sweet ‘Goodbye Road’ did not fail to keep the crowd hyper. Their fast-paced hit ‘Killing Me’ enveloped the stadium as iKON danced with vigour and passion, while fans chanted along to complement the song. The next song was ‘Freedom’, a pumped-up rock-based song featuring, which was accompanied by an eye-catching animated video of iKON playing instruments.
Disappearing off stage for a breather, iKON returned for their encore with ‘Just for You’, iKON TV’s special fan song for the audience. The saccharine sweet tune had fans swaying from side to side, waving their lightsticks and phones in the air. It was followed up by ‘Love Scenario’, this time with the group singing casually and interacting with the audience as they bounced around the stage.
To the fans’s delight, iKON also performed two more songs from their new album ‘NEW KIDS: THE FINAL’! They flowed from the upbeat ‘Don’t Let Me Know’ into a love ballad ‘Adore You’ that showed off their rap and vocal skills. Ending the concert with a bang was ‘Dumb and Dumber’, a loud anthemic number that electrified the atmosphere and turned the concert into a full on party, causing the entire crowd leaping to their feet and chanting along. With a final bow and words of gratitude to their iKONICs, iKON exited the stage, leaving fans happy and hopeful for another iconic return in the near future.
Their individual personalities shone as the idols communicated with the fans in English and joked around with each other on stage. There were lots of cute interactions between the members that made fans squeal in delight, as well as fluid but hard-hitting performances that had everyone in attendance stunned. The audience even sang ‘Happy Birthday’ in Korean to leader B.I., who’s birthday is coming up on the 22nd of October. Overall, it was a spectacular return for iKON to Malaysia, and the fans will hope to see them light up the stage once again in Malaysia soon!
