Borak Arts Festival: Pitchpad ASEAN Finalists Selected
Seven Finalists to Pitch Works to Some of the World’s Leading Festivals and Venues!
Malaysians, Filipino, Singaporean, Indian and Ukrainian selected to present at this year’s Pitchpad ASEAN, Borak Arts Series.
Pitchpad ASEAN is a forum for ASEAN
creators and arts professionals to share and discover new performing arts projects. This year, seven submissions have been selected to pitch their new works to a stellar line-up of international festival directors and venue programmers in the presence of more than 170 performing arts professionals. The selection committee, comprised of Dr. Wong Oi Min (Dean, Faculty of Theatre, ASWARA), Jerome Kugan (writer, poet, musician, artist), Pat Ibrahim (renowned choreographer) and Izan Satrina Mohd Sallehuddin (Founder/Director, MyPAA), reviewed very diverse applications spanning from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Ukraine, Hong Kong, India, Brazil, Serbia and the Philippines.
The seven selected Pitchpad ASEAN participants are:
Azfar Raimi Binti Mua’az Johary from Nading Rhapsody (Malaysia) pitching an avant-garde ethnic musical performance piece
titled “The Ensera”.
Tan E-Jan from Toccata Studio (Malaysia) pitching a contemporary multidisciplinary dance piece titled “2020: I’m from
2020”.
Hasyimah Binti Harith from P7:1SMA Dance (Singapore) pitching a contemporary dance piece named “Belon”.
Faezeh Jalali from FATS The Arts (India) pitching a drama play titled “07/07/07” based on the story of Tehran’s Reyhaneh Jabbari.
Maryna Lymar from UviMkeni Performing Arts Association (Ukraine) pitching an inter-disciplinary dance piece titled “Fragile!
Bodies”.
Ruby Subramaniam (Malaysia) pitching a live painting competition event titled “Art Battle Kuala Lumpur”.
Liesl Catherine Batucan from Tanghalang Pilipino Foundation Inc. (Philippines) pitching a children’s theater titled
“The Wong Kids in the Secret Space of Chupacabra Go!”.
Pitchpad ASEAN will be held on 28 August 2016, Day 2 of Borak Arts Series 2016, at The Wembley, Penang and presented to a line-up of festival directors and venue programmers including Kristopher McDowell (CEO & Founder of KMP Artists, USA), Joe Sidek (Festival Director of GTF and Butterworth Fringe Festival), Andrew Ross (Artistic Director of Darwin Festival, Australia), Joseph Mitchell (Festival Director of OzAsia Festival, Australia), Hisashi Shimoyama (General Producer of Ricca Ricca Festa, Japan), Hanie Nadia Hamzah (Programmer, Esplanade Singapore), Hiromi Maruoka (Director, Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama, Japan), Masahiko Yokobori (Festival/Tokyo, Japan) and Luckana Kunavichayanont (Director, Bangkok Arts and Culture Centre, Thailand).
These respected festival directors and venue programmers will also be present at Borak Arts Series 2016 for the One-On-One Meetings session and numerous networking opportunities where delegates may ask questions pertaining how they fund or collaborate with foreign acts to perform at their festivals/venues. Those who are interested to attend the 2-day conference
may purchase passes from www.borakarts.com or call +603 6207 9566.
Some successes from last year’s platform are amplified via the below:
Phare (Cambodia) to be respresented by KMP Artists (USA)
Bordal Serei by Amrita Performing Arts (Cambodia) to be presented at Esplanade Singapore (Singapore)
SK!N by TerryandtheCuz (Malaysia) to be presented at OzAsia Festival (Australia)
Moved by Padi by Aida Redza and Ombak-Ombak ARTStudio (Malaysia) to be presented at George Town Festival (Malaysia)
Gobyerno by Sipat Lawin Ensemble (Philippines) to be presented at Darwin Festival (Australia)
“Borak Arts Series is coming to its fourth year and attendees who have attended the previous years can validate that the conference has enriched them in one way or another. I urge the ASEAN communities especially Malaysian arts community who are involved in creating works and wanting to expand their networks to sign up as you be within arm’s reach to some of the most iconic personalities in the international performing arts industry right here in Malaysia. Admission fees to performing arts conferences around the world would cost an arm and a leg but Borak Arts Series’ admission fee is greatly subsidised so that Malaysian and ASEAN artists and companies have the opportunity to explore the endless possibilities out there - it is priceless.
We are very delighted to see Borak Arts Series grow from strength to strength. A local home grown brand that has gained much regional traction, Borak Arts Series has become the starting point for many conversations with partners outside Malaysia, initiated either by MyPAA or by the artistes and producers actively investing in their international relationships,” remarked Izan Satrina Mohd Sallehuddin.
Borak Arts Series 2016 is made possible by the following partners: George Town Festival, Yayasan Hasanah, Yayasan Sime Darby, Asia Center Japan Foundation, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, GoetheInstitut, Yayasan TM, ASEF Culture 360, ARTERI, The Daily Seni and Rentak Sejuta.
