Diversecity Dance KL 2015: Kuala Lumpur International Dance Festival 2015 @ Kuala Lumpur (3/9 - 4/10/15)
The Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival (KLIAF) 2015 itself was launched last May and now Sutra Foundation is delighted to share with the media specifically the Dance Genre component of KLIAF 2015. No doubt KLIAF 2015 is making its own history! It’s about time that Kuala Lumpur has its own culture brand in the form of a curated Arts Festival!
In this press conference our focus in on the actual Dance-Theatre productions we have in store for the audience – a total of 12 premieres which will take on both national and international performances. The Dance-Theatre genre of KLIAF is a comprehensive platform and umbrella for a focused showcase of stimulating dance-theatre creations.
What is unique and exciting about the Dance Genre of KLIAF 2015 is that the productions featured are curated with a thematic thrust – i.e. to rediscover our heritage – and to restate, redefine and engage cherished traditions in its transformation into relevant contemporary outpourings. KL is one of the unique capital cities of Southeast Asia where the population is truly diverse, more so than any other cities in the region. It is built on the rich plurality and multi-cultural presence of our traditions, be it in food, fashion, dance, music, arts or literature. These should be a deep well of resource for creative inspirations. Expect to be surprised by the transformation of many of the things we have taken for granted morphing into something new, original and current!
Festival curator, Ramli Ibrahim (Dance), has conceived of an impressive line-up of dance institutions and talents for this exciting undertaking, conjuring a stellar group of Malaysian dance-makers in a month long exposition of their newest works. Never before has Malaysia experienced a treasure trove of 12 world premieres - of various dance-theatre genres within a period of one month, making the Festival a veritable dance-playground and dance-crazy period KL has ever seen.
As curator of the dance component of KLIAF 2015, Sutra Foundation has convinced major dance players in Malaysia – institutions and their artistic directors, individual choreographers, composers, lighting and set designers – to synergise their creative energy in an integrated effort to give KLIAF 2015 a truly original and stimulating artistic fiesta. Culture and Arts have always been the antidote to collective doldrums and to lift flagged spirits.
To promote the Festival to the general public, Sutra Foundation will be presenting dance flash-mobs as teasers in 2 sessions on 8-August, (3 – 5pm) & 9-September, 10-1 pm at the front facade of Low Yat Plaza (along the Bintang Walk).

I am from Ganjam, so are the Images is an exhibition of paintings and drawings by distinguished Odiya artist, Dr Dinanath Pathy. Born and brought up in Ganjam, Pathy’s earthy images, give a radiant aura of the land that has inspired them. In his autobiography, The Drawing Master of Digapahandi (Pathy’s birth place in Ganjam), the painter casts himself as the alter-ego of Ganjam. Pathy, who began as a painter of backdrops of his village folk theatre, is now recognised as an artist of international standing and has been a proactive collaborator of Sutra Foundation.

Ganjam
GANJAM (Odissi), is homage to this culturally potent region of Southern Odisha, home ground of some of Odisha 's eminent medieval composers, poets and literary figures. Ramli Ibrahim, Sutra's Artistic Director, has commissioned new and adventurous repertoire from Guru Gajendra Panda, himself the son of Ganjam, inspired by the folk dances and musical traditions of rural Ganjam to further infuse fresh energy and vocabulary into Sutra's odissi. Sutra dancers, internationally known for its excellence in odissi, will be accompanied by musicians from Odisha in this new and exciting hymn to odissi.
GANJAM has several connotations. It refers to a cultural rich district of southern Odisha, home ground of some of Odisha's great medieval composers, poets and literary figures. Present-day odissi dancers still dance to the works of Upendra Bhanja and Gopalakrishna, two popular poets among many, who hail from Ganjam. Hundreds of folk dance and theatre genres, each accompanied by its own distinctive music style, still thrive in Ganjam.
Ganjam also refers to a nest of pearls, and quintessentially indicates finery-intricate ornaments women love to wear.
Essentials of GANJAM, the production, hold a surprise from its newest dance compositions commissioned by Sutra to Guru Gajendra Panda. The latter is a native son of Ganjam - as is Dr Dinanath Pathy, the production's consultant. Since young, both are steeped in the traditional arts and culture of Ganjam district. Ramli Ibrahim, Sutra artistic director, has commissioned them to conceive a new and adventurous repertoire inspired by the folk dances and musical compositions of Ganjam to further infuse fresh energy and vocabulary into Sutra's odissi. Sutra dancers, now internationally known for its excellence in odissi, will be accompanied by musicians from Odisha in this exciting production and world premiere.
This production is not intended to tilt the balance which exists in odissi in favour of Ganjam. Neither does it offers a counter poise. It is intended to stand for the spirit of unexplored beauty that could be part of present day odissi. It attempts to inject the ingenious creativity and artfulness -- inspired by the folk and rural forms from the cultural rich Ganjam -- imbuing present day odissi with a spirit of endless discovery.
For this we are weaving several dialectic forms. For example: the vigorous steppings of the demon king Hiranyakasipu; musical Sabda Swara Pata of Prahallad Nataka and from folk Daskathia; the narratology of leelas and the graceful jerks of Sakhinata; and the raw and unhewn vibrancy of several folk theaters. It is hoped that a sense of depth and linear exploration will emerge with the dance compositions which are choreographed and layered with Ganjam textures.
GANJAM, the odissi production, is homage to this culturally potent region and to the unsung heroes who have kept the spirit of Ganjam alive. It is a hymn to the builders of future Odissi.
