Diversecity Music 2015 - Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival @ Kuala Lumpur (29/8 - 4/10/15)
This September, Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival (also known as Diversecity 2015), the first large-scale landmark performing arts festival in the city, will feature a music fest comprising over 200 Malaysian musicians and international artistes from a wide variety of genres spread across several venues in Kuala Lumpur.
Curator Michael Veerapen, a music icon in Malaysia, is putting together a large ensemble of musicians – singer-songwriters, jazz musicians, the National Symphony Orchestra, the RTM Big Band Jazz Ensemble, classical musicians, rock bands, percussionists and many more – to showcase the vast amount of talent in the country and the region.
Music lovers of all genres can look forward to an impressive line-up of events throughout September. From music gigs in popular KL outlets to concerts in Stadium Negara and the Perdana Botanical Gardens, folks and visitors to KL will be in for a treat.
Some of the artistes confirmed to take the stage include the legendary Kuh Ledesma from the Philippines, Indonesian pop star Marcell Siaahan, Malaysia’s own Dasha Logan, Dato’ Khadijah Ibrahim and Zainal Abidin and an array of top percussion troupes such as Malaysian multi-ethnic ensemble Akasha and a group of specially-assembled international percussionists led by Steve Thornton.
Curator & Musical Director - Michael Veerapen
“As the curator for music, my aim is to bring the various music genre to as wide a public as possible. We will be showcasing many of our own local talents to our fellow Malaysians and visitors to the country.”
“I believe that curators from arts festivals around the world will get to view the performances, and our hope is that they will recognise this talent and therefore invite Malaysian musicians to perform at their festivals abroad.”
When discussing Malaysian Jazz, the name most people would associate with it would be pianist Michael Veerapen. Even before graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music with Summa Cum Laude in 1982, he had already made a name for himself as an up and coming pianist having worked with some of the more popular bands who were at the forefront of the band era in the 70’s.
He co-organized Malaysia’s first Jazz Rock concert in 1978, which brought about a tremendous interest in Jazz especially amongst younger audiences and thereby planting the seeds for the way Jazz is loved in his country. His studies in Berklee proved to be a major factor towards making his an illustrious career, as a renowned Jazz Pianist, as a composer, a musical Director for many of Malaysia’s top performers, as an owner of a successful Music Production Company and also as a music teacher, having taught many of his fellow musicians who are indebted to him for their music literacy skills. Michael has travelled around the world performing in Jazz Festivals, Concerts and has in recent times, put together several ‘Duet’ performances with his illustrious colleagues, with the aim of challenging himself in the more difficult and demanding styles of jazz performance and improvisation.
He has performed with many illustrious Musicians and Singers over these years and has earned for himself the greatest respect of his colleagues, both at home and abroad as one of Malaysia’s true Musical treasures.
